Astrantia - Masterwort (Astrantia)

Astrantia's are beautiful plants for in a rich soil in half-shade. More sun is ok as long as the soil is moist. Astrantia does not grow quick, but steadily, over the years they will form a nice clump. There are white, pink and red varieties. They are good cut flowers. If happy, Astrantia can self-seed, but often their offspring are less colourful. To prevent self-seeding, cut away the flower stems after flowering. Quite often this will also stimulate a second flowering. Astrantia looks best planted in groups of minimal 5 plants in the border. Astrantia looks great next to Heuchera.
