General information about Sweet Flag (Acorus):
Sweet Flag (Acorus) is an evergreen, grass like plant for at the water's edge. Its flower is like a corncob full of minute little flowers. The leaves of Sweet Flag grow fan shaped together. Rootstock and leaves have a sweet scent, especially when dried. Plant Sweet Flag in a moist area that will not dry out, together with, for example Avens (Geum). Some varieties of Sweet Flag have lovely variegated leaves.

General information about Baneberry (Actaea):
Baneberry (Actaea) is a genus of plants usually with white torch like flowers. After flowering they produce berries. Some species flower in spring, others in late summer and autumn. Many Baneberries have a lovely scent. They are plants for in a cool position and like plenty of organic matter in the soil. Baneberry grows best in half shade, in normal to moist soil. Some species have nice dark foliage. Good neighbours for Baneberry are for instance Mountain Fleece (Persicaria amplexicaulis), Monkshood (Aconitum) and Astilbe (Astilbe).

General information about Bugle (Ajuga):
Bugle (Ajuga) is a carpeting evergreen perennial for in the sun or half shade. If in the sun, Bugle needs enough moisture. Bugle spreads with above ground creeping shoots and forms a nice carpet. If, after several years, you get some 'bold' patches, clear these patches and re-plant with some fresh new shoots. A great display is when you combine Bugle with blue flowers and dark foliage with orange Avens (Geum) and light blue or white Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera). This combination still looks good after flowering with its contrasting foliage.

Cow Parsley (Anthriscus) has fern-like foliage and a shield of small white flowers. Cow Parsley is well suited to a wild garden, where it is allowed to self-seed as usually the plant will die after flowering. Preferably plant in a sunny spot in a normal to rich soil. General information about Thrift (Armeria):
Thrift (Armeria) is a low growing perennial. It's fine, grass-like foliage forms clumps above which the flowers sit nicely. Some species form flower stems of up to 20 cm. Thrift enjoys a sunny open position in dry to normal soil. Thrifts natural habitat is along the coast and therefore the plant is resilient to salt and also salt-spreading along roads. An ideal plant for gardeners along the coast. Good companion plants for Thrift are Thyme (Thymus), Fleabane (Erigeron), Catmint (Nepeta) and Cotton Lavender (Santolina). Removing dead flowers will lengthen the flowering period. Apart from the species 'pseudarmeria', all Thrifts are hardy.

Astilbes (Astilbe) comes in many varieties, from small to large. Most like a place in half shade in moist soil. Astilbe-varieties from the chinensis group are more sun and drought tolerant then the others. An annual gift of some compost is appreciated. Astilbe looks best when planted in larger groups. A good plant for in the border as well as in a wild garden. After flowering, the flower stems look nice when left throughout winter. Use Coral Bells (Heuchera), Monkshood (Aconitum) and Sedge (Carex) as good neighbour plants for Astilbe.

Wild Ginger (Asarum) is a genus of slow growing, sometimes evergreen, low, spreading perennials for in a shady position. The foliage is attractive, glossy or marbled. It produces small flowers that are concealed beneath its foliage. Good for a normal to moist, well-draining soil. A period of drought will not harm Wild Ginger. Good neighbour plants for Wild Ginger are Japanese Painted Fern (Athyrium niponicum), Barrenwort (Epimedium), Weeping Sedge (Carex oshimensis) and low growing blue Hosta's (Hosta).

General information about False Indigo (Baptisia):
False Indigo (Baptisia)'s are Lupin-like plants with thick, strong roots. This is one of the reasons it can take a few years for these plants to fully mature. Once established, it will last for years. Better not to keep moving it about. Many species of False Indigo produce apart from pea-like flowers also nice pea pods which stay on the plant for a long time. False Indigo likes a spot in the sun or light shade in a normal to dry soil. In acidic soil the plant will struggle. A lot of new colours have come to market in the last few years, so you should find a right colour for any border. False Indigo is very good for in a prairie garden, combined with Helen's Flower (Helenium) and ornamental grasses. In the past the foliage of False Indigo was used to produce a bleu dye.

Elephant's Ears (Bergenia) is a ground covering, usual evergreen plant whose foliage often takes on nice autumn colours. Elephant's Ears likes a spot in the sun or half shade in normal soil. They are definitely not choosy plants. Once established they are quite drought tolerant. After a few years' gaps might appear in your clumps. Digging them up and splitting the plants will cure this. They love some added compost in spring. Elephant's Ears look best when planted in larger groups and can be used for covering larger areas. Good partners for Elephant's Ears are Cranesbill (Geranium) and ornamental grasses.

Mosquito Grass (Bouteloua) is a clump forming grass that spread through short rhizomes. The panicles of dens flower spikes float loosely above the plant. Mosquito Grass likes a dry and sunny spot and hates wet feet in the winter. Because of its natural look this grass grows well in a prairie garden.
