Before planting, loosen the soil well and apply crushed stone to the bottom of the planting hole, because the roots of Giant Lily are sensitive to excess moisture. Provide a nutritious, humus-rich soil. After the flowering of Giant Lily, the bulb with the flowering stem dies. Often new bubbles have already formed in the meantime. In winter, cover Giant Lily with dead leaves or straw. Giant Lily sprouts early in the spring. Keep an eye out for snails, because they love the young leaves. Giant Lily may take several years to flower.

General information about Day Lily (Hemerocallis):
Day Lily (Hemerocallis) is a half winter green perennial with striking flowers in many colours. The flowers of Day Lily are edible and look nice in salads. The flowers only bloom for a single day, but there are many buds on the stem which ensures flowers for weeks on end. Day Lily is a good plant for in the border, as a solitary plant or in groups. The small flowering species are also good in a prairie garden. Good partners for Day Lily are Phlox (Phlox), Larkspur (Delphinium), Cranesbill (Geranium), Beebalm (Monarda) and tall ornamental grasses. Day Lily is a plant for in the half shade or sun in good garden soil which does not dry out. Some fertiliser in spring does the plant good. The last few years has seen a lot of new varieties of Day Lily come to market, especially from America. These include some beautiful new additions but also some which it seems will not be long lived.

General information about Periwinkle (Vinca):
Periwinkle (Vinca) is a genus of ever green ground covers. They will grow anywhere and form a very 'neat' covering of the soil. Apart from the well-known green leaved / blue flowered species there are now also ones with frilly or variegated leaves and white or purple/red flowers. Periwinkle prefers a spot in normal soil and half shade. More sun is ok as long as the soil is moist enough. Also in the full shade Periwinkle will grow but flower less. You can cut away all the leaves in spring, which shows the flowers better and also re-juninates the plant. Especially Lesser Periwinkle is ideal to use under shrubs, trees and other difficult places such as mounds. Once filled out properly, Periwinkle forms a nice, maintenance free dense ground cover which also suppresses weeds very well.

Meadow Rue varies in size from 10 cm to over 2 meters. The tall species will need some extra support in the garden, either with a stake or with the help of strong neighbour plants. Meadow Rue likes a spot in the half shade in normal to moist soil. It will do in the sun as well as long as the soil is moist enough. If in doubt you can always dig in some extra compost. Feather Grass likes a warm spot in the sun in normal to dry soil, preferable with some lime. Especially in winter an excess of water need to flow away. A few species of Feather Grass need some extra protection over winter. The hardiness of the plants is shown in the shop. Many species of Feather Grass do well in a modern garden, for example in a bed of gravel. In the garden, the taller species look best solitary and the smaller species look best when planted in groups. Choose neighbour plants which do not grow taller than one third of the Feather Grass, otherwise you lose the nice, loose effect of their flowers.
