Tulip  (Tulipa)

The flowers of the Tulip (Tulipa) we all know. They have been grown for centuries and there are thousands of different cultivars in production. Often you see the varieties with one flower on one tall stem. These we do not sell. The varieties we sell are the low Tulips, more or less wild varieties. These so-called botanical varieties can just stay out in the garden and in the right spot they will multiple and spread happily. Tulip wants a spot in the sun and well-draining soil. In spring the soil should be moist but for the rest of the year, ideally it will be drier. After flowering, Tulip goes into a rest period. Leave the leaves on the plant. They will slowly go yellow and then disappear altogether. Make sure that the sun still hits the spot of soil where the Tulip has retreated even though nothing is visible above ground. The botanical varieties often carry more than one flowers per stem. The flowers will only open up in sunny weather. Tulip combines nice with other spring flowering plants such as Dwarf Iris (Iris pumila), Rockcress (Arabis), Sweet Violet (Viola odorata) and Grecian Windflower (Anemone blanda).
