Dryopteris - Male Fern

Dryopteris is a large genus of ferns. They come from all over the world and are evergreen or half evergreen. Cut away the brown leaves at the end of March. Dryopteris is not fussy about its soil as long as not in the full sun. Dryopteris forms a nice clump, is not invasive and should be present in all woodland and shady gardens. Dryopteris is fully hardy but is still advisable to give them protection in their first winter. Growers have produced some cultivars of Dryopteris with unusual shaped leaves and is also used in floristry.
