Equisetum - Horsetail

Equisetum is an ancient genus, closely related to ferns although they look completely different. Some of Equisetum species can be very invasive. If in doubt, it is best to plant into a pot and then bury the pot in the garden. Usually Equisetum likes sunshine and plenty of moisture. They will grow in boggy areas or in mini-ponds on the terrace. Because of its unusual shape, Equisetum adds interest to the garden. They look good next to plants with contrasting round or oval leaves. Try the smaller Equisetums with Ajuga, Mentha or Primula japonica and the large Equisetums with Ligularia and Persicaria amplexicaulis.
