Sedum - Stonecrop

Sedum is a genus of plants, varying from creeping rockery plants to large border plants. They have varying flower- and leaf shapes. There is a Sedum for every garden. On the whole, Sedum like a spot in the sun in quite dry, poor soil. Too much moisture in winter must be avoided. The low varieties of Sedum are ideal ground covers. The taller varieties belong in the border where they will attract a lot of insects. Digging these Sedum ones up and splitting them every few years will ensure they stay healthy and strong. Some tall varieties of Sedum are prone to toppling over. Cut these ones back by half in June. They will then branch and grow less tall, resulting in more but smaller flowers. Sedum combines well with Salvia nemorosa, Sidalcea, Liatris and Pennisetum. Also Gypsophila paniculata and Gaura, with their open growth look good next to Sedum.
