Veronicastrum - Culver's Root

Veronicastrum is a group of tall stately plants which give the border a backbone, even in winter. Veronicastrum is an easy plant which will last for years without much attention. It can take a couple of years for them to mature. They like a normal to slight moist soil. Dig some compost in when planting and then give them another hand full every spring. Full sunshine will enhance the flowering but a few hours less will not harm. You can always top a number of the flower stems in early summer and thereby spread the flowering period even longer. Veronicastrum looks good alongside water but also in the border. Good neighbours are Panicum, Filipendula, tall Phlox and Helenium. Veronicastrum attracts lots of insects. In a few varieties you may see that different pinnacle fuse together and form one flat one.
