Insect Friendly Plants

Bees, bumblebees and butterflies are not only beautiful to look at, but they are also of great importance for the propagation of plants. A world as it exists today, would be unthinkable without insects. Without them there would be hardly any seeds and fruits.

Butterflies, bumblebees, bees and many other insects are finding it increasingly difficult to find enough food. To help them, garden owners can plant suitable perennials in the garden.
Insect-friendly plants look natural and usually they have flowers that are unfilled, i.e. the center of the flower is clearly visible. With double flowers, insects cannot reach the nectar and pollen because the heart of the flower is hidden under petals.

Preferably, the composition of plants in the garden should be such that there is food for the insects from early spring to late autumn. The choice of insect-friendly perennials is large. The best plants for butterflies, bees and bumblebees are:

Spring:   Hellebore,  Lungwort,  Primrose,  Aubrietia 
Early summer:   Onion,  Thrift,  Dead Nettle,  Yarrow,  Bugle,  Alisons
Summer:   Lavender,  Oregano,  Thyme,  Calamint,  Catmint,  Woodland Sage,  Tickseed, Coneflower,  Purple Loosestrife,  Phlox,  Leopard Plant,  Mint,  Blazing Star,  Meadowsweet
Late summer:   Vervain,  Stonecrop,  Aster,  Japanese Anemone,  Hemp Agrimony,  Sunflower
Autumn:   Chrysanthemum,  Ironweed,  Baneberry, 

Shadow:  The following insect-friendly perennials can grow in a shaded spot:   Foxglove,  Dusky Cranesbill,  Lungwort,  Spring Vetchling,  Yellow Archangel,  Barren Strawberry

A mix of insect-friendly plants guarantees many butterflies, bees and other insects in your garden. Please note that you choose varieties whose flowers are not filled.
We recommend cutting off spent flowers. This makes sense because it considerably extends the flowering period of your plants. As a result, insects have access to food for a longer time.
