Do not plant Hardy Cyclamen too deep and cover them up a little in their first winter. They want a spot in the half shade in humus rich soil and not too wet in the winter. Hardy Cyclamen easily cross pollinate, therefore the flowers and foliage can be quite variable. During the summer Hardy Cyclamen can go into a rest period and lose their leaves, only to re-appear freshly before flowering.

The rosettes of Beard of Jupiter are beautifully symmetrical in shape and have nice colours. Beard of Jupiter is wonderful in rockeries, troughs or pots. They withstand full sunshine and drought. Plant in sandy soil with some grit or fine gravel mixed in to ensure good drainage. Beard of Jupiter has its nicest colour in spring, out with spring they tend to be greener. Most varieties of Beard of Jupiter we offer have been grown under glass and therefore are slightly paler, but this will disappear once they are planted outside. Why not mix up some different colours and shapes of Beard of Jupiter, or plant with other plants such as Thyme (Thymus), Stonecrop (Sedum) or Blue Fescue (Festuca glauca).

Creeping Creeping Mazus is reasonably hardy but to be safe it is good to give them some protection in a severe winter.

General information about Phlox (Phlox):
Phlox (Phlox) is a genus of perennials of which many varieties are excellent for in the border. Over the years many cultivars have been bred in a wide range of colours. Phlox likes a place in the sun or half shade in a fertile soil that should not dry out during flowering. They all appreciate some extra feed in spring. Nearly all Phloxs have a scent, but Blue Phlox (Phlox divaricate) is nicest. The tall varieties are good in the border. These Border Phloxs will die back over winter. Good partners are Day Lily (Hemerocallis), Helen's Flower (Helenium), Beebalm (Monarda), Fountain Grass (Pennisetum) and Culver's Root (Veronicastrum). Some varieties of Border Phlox are susceptible to mildew. Ensure there is plenty of space and air around the plants. The low varieties (Creeping Phlox) are usually winter green and perfect for in the rockery or as ground cover. Try combining with Aubrietia (Aubrieta) or Serbian Bellflower (Campanula poscharskyana). Also the Creeping Phloxs (Phlox) are good in a planted pot where they hang nicely over the sides.

Also Pearlwort is nice in a Japanese garden where it can be used as a substitute to moss. Pearlwort wants a well-draining soil in the sun or half shade. If in the full sun, make sure the soil is moist enough. In time, Pearlwort will form dense mats. If these become too high, just press them down. For a daring combination you could always plant a clump of Black Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Niger') between Pearlwort.

General information about Stonecrop (Sedum):
Stonecrop (Sedum) is a genus of plants, varying from creeping rockery plants to large border plants. They have varying flower- and leaf shapes. There is a Stonecrop for every garden. On the whole, Stonecrop like a spot in the sun in quite dry, poor soil. Too much moisture in winter must be avoided. The low varieties of Stonecrop are ideal ground covers. The taller varieties belong in the border where they will attract a lot of insects. Digging these Stonecrop ones up and splitting them every few years will ensure they stay healthy and strong. Some tall varieties of Stonecrop are prone to toppling over. Cut these ones back by half in June. They will then branch and grow less tall, resulting in more but smaller flowers. Stonecrop combines well with Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa), SidHollyhock, Blazing Star (Liatris) and Fountain Grass (Pennisetum). Also Baby's Breath (Gypsophila paniculata) and Bee Blossom (Gaura), with their open growth look good next to Stonecrop.

General information about Thyme (Thymus):
Thyme (Thymus) is a genus of creeping perennials with scented leaves. They form dense mats which occasionally could be walked upon. Thyme is available with different types of leaves, scent, flower colour and shape. They are plants which are good for in the rockery, on walls or just 'appeared' in a path. They attract lots of insects. Thyme is ever green and likes a dry and sunny position. You could cut them back slightly in spring, after flowering. This will help to keep them nice and compact. Thyme also looks nice in a pot or trough on the patio or balcony, planted with other herbs, such as Chives (Allium schoenoprasum), Wild Oregano (Origanum vulgare), Rosemary (Rosmarinus), Mint (Mentha), Culinary Sage (Salvia officinalis) and Balm (Melissa). Planted up with these, you have a good supply for in the kitchen.

General information about Pansy (Viola):
Pansy (Viola) has been grown for centuries for its pretty flowers, which even scent lovely in a few species. There are species of Pansy which only last for one season, think the large headed winter pansies, which are sold in masses every autumn. There are also other species of Pansy which with some care will last for years, such as Horned Violet (Viola cornuta) and Sweet Violet (Viola odorata). The flowers of these species are smaller than the afore mentioned winter pansies, but therefore more in balance with the green of the plant and also better resistant against poor weather. Cut Pansy back a bit if they get a bit straggly and spoil them with some fertilizer. Taking out the seed pods will prolong the flowering season. The plant will also remain stronger. Pretty much all Pansy do well in half shade in normal soil.
