Flattened Alexander's Foot (Anacyclus) is a genus of annual and short living perennials. Anacyclus pyrethrum var. depressus belongs to the latter group. It has daisy-like flowers and a fine green foliage. Once established, it can form a dense mat. Flattened Alexander's Foot likes a place in the sun in a well-draining, dry to normal moist soil. Especially in the winter, drainage needs to be good. Therefore, planting slightly elevated or on a slope is good. Flattened Alexander's Foot is well suited to a warm place in the rockery, together with Ice Plant (Delosperma), Shrubby Gromwell (Lithodora), Houseleek (Sempervivum) and low Stonecrops (Sedum).

Thrift (Armeria) is a low growing perennial. It's fine, grass-like foliage forms clumps above which the flowers sit nicely. Some species form flower stems of up to 20 cm. Thrift enjoys a sunny open position in dry to normal soil. Thrifts natural habitat is along the coast and therefore the plant is resilient to salt and also salt-spreading along roads. An ideal plant for gardeners along the coast. Good companion plants for Thrift are Thyme (Thymus), Fleabane (Erigeron), Catmint (Nepeta) and Cotton Lavender (Santolina). Removing dead flowers will lengthen the flowering period. Apart from the species 'pseudarmeria', all Thrifts are hardy.

Cutting Aubrietia back after flowering stimulates mat- or mound forming and healthy re-growth. If too wet in winter, you may lose your plants. Ensuring good drainage will eliminate this. They will grow in virtually any soil as long as this is not continually wet. Bellflower loves sun but will also do well in half shade. In the wild Bellflowers come in shades of blue to purple. Beard of Jupiter (Jovibarba) is closely related to Houseleek (Sempervivum) and looks very much alike, but Beard of Jupiter has bell shaped flowers with fewer petals. The rosettes of Beard of Jupiter are beautifully symmetrical in shape and have nice colours. Beard of Jupiter is wonderful in rockeries, troughs or pots. They withstand full sunshine and drought. Plant in sandy soil with some grit or fine gravel mixed in to ensure good drainage. Beard of Jupiter has its nicest colour in spring, out with spring they tend to be greener. Most varieties of Beard of Jupiter we offer have been grown under glass and therefore are slightly paler, but this will disappear once they are planted outside. Why not mix up some different colours and shapes of Beard of Jupiter, or plant with other plants such as Thyme (Thymus), Stonecrop (Sedum) or Blue Fescue (Festuca glauca).

Mondo Grass likes a spot in (half)shade in humus rich slightly acidic soil. Once established it is quite drought tolerant. Because Mondo Grass is evergreen its foliage can sustain some frost damage. Phlox (Phlox) is a genus of perennials of which many varieties are excellent for in the border. Over the years many cultivars have been bred in a wide range of colours. Phlox likes a place in the sun or half shade in a fertile soil that should not dry out during flowering. They all appreciate some extra feed in spring. Nearly all Phloxs have a scent, but Blue Phlox (Phlox divaricate) is nicest. The tall varieties are good in the border. These Border Phloxs will die back over winter. Good partners are Day Lily (Hemerocallis), Helen's Flower (Helenium), Beebalm (Monarda), Fountain Grass (Pennisetum) and Culver's Root (Veronicastrum). Some varieties of Border Phlox are susceptible to mildew. Ensure there is plenty of space and air around the plants. Pearlwort (Sagina) is one of the lowest growing ground covers for in the garden. It is very nice to use Pearlwort on patio's and paths with wide gaps between the slabs where it will nicely soften the edges. Also Pearlwort is nice in a Japanese garden where it can be used as a substitute to moss. Pearlwort wants a well-draining soil in the sun or half shade. If in the full sun, make sure the soil is moist enough. In time, Pearlwort will form dense mats. If these become too high, just press them down. For a daring combination you could always plant a clump of Black Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Niger') between Pearlwort.

Pansy (Viola) has been grown for centuries for its pretty flowers, which even scent lovely in a few species. There are species of Pansy which only last for one season, think the large headed winter pansies, which are sold in masses every autumn. There are also other species of Pansy which with some care will last for years, such as Horned Violet (Viola cornuta) and Sweet Violet (Viola odorata).
