Yarrows (Achillea) are low to high perennials for a sunny position on normal to poor soil. The foliage is feathery and the plant has a shield of small flower heads. The flowers lend themselves well for drying. It looks best when Yarrow is planted in large groups. Deadhead after flowering to prevent seed forming. This will stimulate new growth and prevent seedlings growing in the centres of the plants. These will often not be the same colour as the mother plants. Good neighbours for Yarrow are for example Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa), Helen's Flower (Helenium), Stonecrop (Sedum) and ornamental grasses.

Giant Hyssop (Agastache) are strong upright plants with angular stems and lancet shaped, toothed foliage. The many species and cultivars have many colours. They can smell like Fennel and Anise. Giant Hyssop is drought tolerant and does not like wet feet in the winter. Some species of Giant Hyssop flower so profusely that they hardly form new shoots for the next year. Cut these ones well back in September. Butterflies and other insects loves Giant Hyssop. Good neighbours for a colourful display are Yarrow (Achillea), Helen's Flower (Helenium), Ox-eye Daisy (Leucanthemum) and Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia).

General information about Hollyhock (Alcea):
Most Hollyhock (Alcea) are bi-annual. They are tall, stately plants in beautiful colours. Hollyhock looks best against a fence or wall. There are now some new perennial species available which are less prone to rust on their leaves. Something that will not kill Hollyhock, but doesn't look nice. Usually these affected plants are in too moist a position. There is still some debate over the proper naming of the bi- and perennials. In our web shop we have put the perennials under the genus Mallow (Malva).

Milkweed (Asclepias) has tuber like roots and white milk-sap. Many species of Milkweed have narrow elliptic foliage and lovely flowers which attract lots of insects. Milkweed is also a good cut flower. Sometimes the plant will produce green seed pods which split when ripe to release silky-hairy seeds. Milkweed needs a well-draining soil and a position in full sun. It will not tolerate wet feet in the winter. New shoots are formed quite late in spring so be aware if tidying the garden before this. Better to give Milkweed some protection in a hard frost.

Pampas Grass (Cortaderia) is a clump forming, usually tall ornamental grass for in an open spot in the full sun in good soil. Pampas Grass has beautiful tall flower plumes and grey-green foliage with rough sharp edges. The first few years after planting it is advised to cover Pampas Grass with straw in winter, as it is not yet fully hardy. Also too much water in winter can be deadly. A good practice is to tie all the foliage up into a sheaf before the winter. This will divert excess water away from the heart of the plant and also protect against frost. Tickseed (Coreopsis) is a genus of beautiful flowering plants for a not too fertile, well-draining soil in full sun. Tickseed is a must in a colourful flower border but also good to use in planters combined with annuals. There are lots of new varieties being introduced right now of which hardiness and longevity are not known yet. Tickseed from the groups 'lanceolata' and 'grandiflora' are short lived. You can prolong their life by cutting back the plants in late summer down to 5-10 cm above soil level. Moorgrass (Molinia) is a clump forming hardy grass with tall upright stems. Many varieties of Moorgrass display nice autumn colours.
