General information about Yarrow (Achillea):
Yarrows (Achillea) are low to high perennials for a sunny position on normal to poor soil. The foliage is feathery and the plant has a shield of small flower heads. The flowers lend themselves well for drying. It looks best when Yarrow is planted in large groups. Deadhead after flowering to prevent seed forming. This will stimulate new growth and prevent seedlings growing in the centres of the plants. These will often not be the same colour as the mother plants. Good neighbours for Yarrow are for example Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa), Helen's Flower (Helenium), Stonecrop (Sedum) and ornamental grasses.

General information about Hollyhock (Alcea):
Most Hollyhock (Alcea) are bi-annual. They are tall, stately plants in beautiful colours. Hollyhock looks best against a fence or wall. There are now some new perennial species available which are less prone to rust on their leaves. Something that will not kill Hollyhock, but doesn't look nice. Usually these affected plants are in too moist a position. There is still some debate over the proper naming of the bi- and perennials. In our web shop we have put the perennials under the genus Mallow (Malva).

General information about Onion (Allium):
The genus Onion (Allium) includes many vegetables but also plenty of ornamental species. Most Onions like a sunny position in a good, slightly alkaline soil. In the winter the bulbs can rot if they are too wet. If you plant your Onion in the autumn, cover them for the first winter with a layer of leaves. With a lot of the species the leaves will dye back during the flowering period. Remember this when planting and camouflage the gaps with, for instant, ornamental grasses. Some of the smaller species of Onion can spread vigorously. These are good for in a wild garden. Onion flowers attract lots of insects and are also good cut flowers. When the tall species flower on the nursery, they sometimes are too tall to ship out. We could cut them back, but then you loss that years flower. Best to order early or contact us first.

General information about Milkweed (Asclepias):
Milkweed (Asclepias) has tuber like roots and white milk-sap. Many species of Milkweed have narrow elliptic foliage and lovely flowers which attract lots of insects. Milkweed is also a good cut flower. Sometimes the plant will produce green seed pods which split when ripe to release silky-hairy seeds. Milkweed needs a well-draining soil and a position in full sun. It will not tolerate wet feet in the winter. New shoots are formed quite late in spring so be aware if tidying the garden before this. Better to give Milkweed some protection in a hard frost.

General information about Small Reed (Calamagrostis):
Small Reed (Calamagrostis) is a group of upright tall grasses which flower in summer. After that the clumps turn golden brown and stay attractive into the winter. Small Reed likes a spot in the sun, in dry to normal, not too fertile soil. Not enough sun or too much fertilizer will make for weak, arching plants. Small Reed looks great planted as a solitary plant. Why not plant a group of 3 or 5 plants in the flower border to create a vertical accent next to Beebalm (Monarda), Coneflower (Echinacea), Aster (Aster), Giant Hyssop (Agastache) and Goldenrod (Solidago).

General information about Pale Indian Plantain (Arnoglossum):
Pale Indian Plantain is a genus of predominantly sturdy plants from North America. The naming of plants in this genus is quite in flux. They are plants with many, but relatively small aster-like flowers that attract many insects. Pale Indian Plantain prefers a spot in full sun on normal to slightly moist soil. Pale Indian Plantain fits well in a natural planting and then provides a nice vertical accent.

General information about Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum):
We all know Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum) as cut flowers, but there are also many varieties available as hardy plants for in the garden. This group you will find in our on-line shop. Chrysanthemums are available in a variety of colours and shapes, singles, doubles or pom-pom. Because they flower late in the season, they are very useful in the border, in a sunny to lightly shaded spot in a well-draining soil. Best plant Chrysanthemum before the summer so that they have plenty of time to establish properly before winter. If you do plant Chrysanthemum in late summer, best to cover the plants with a layer of straw or leaves in winter. Taller varieties of Chrysanthemum can be topped in early summer to produce bushier plants.

General information about Clematis (Clematis):
Everybody knows Clematis (Clematis) as a climbing plant but there are also some low growing species very suited to the border. In our web shop you will find the smaller and wild species of Clematis. Plant them near other plants with strong stems or let them droop over a wall. Make sure that Clematis is planted in the sun or half shade, but that the roots are shaded. You could plant a small evergreen shrub in front of it. Plant Clematis in a humus rich soil with enough drainage. Some added, dried farm manure in spring is very much appreciated.

General information about Pampas Grass (Cortaderia):
Pampas Grass (Cortaderia) is a clump forming, usually tall ornamental grass for in an open spot in the full sun in good soil. Pampas Grass has beautiful tall flower plumes and grey-green foliage with rough sharp edges. The first few years after planting it is advised to cover Pampas Grass with straw in winter, as it is not yet fully hardy. Also too much water in winter can be deadly. A good practice is to tie all the foliage up into a sheaf before the winter. This will divert excess water away from the heart of the plant and also protect against frost. Do not cut back the leaves till spring time. To give Pampas Grass a good start, it is recommended to plant Pampas Grass before the summer. Pampas Grass is beautiful as a specimen or in a grass-garden, surrounded by less tall ornamental grasses.

General information about Tickseed (Coreopsis):
Tickseed (Coreopsis) is a genus of beautiful flowering plants for a not too fertile, well-draining soil in full sun. Tickseed is a must in a colourful flower border but also good to use in planters combined with annuals. There are lots of new varieties being introduced right now of which hardiness and longevity are not known yet. Tickseed from the groups 'lanceolata' and 'grandiflora' are short lived. You can prolong their life by cutting back the plants in late summer down to 5-10 cm above soil level. A shame if they still have flowers, but now they will put their energy into producing new shoots for spring. The most reliable Tickseed are those from the group 'verticillata'. Do not let the above put you off using Tickseed in the garden. They are not expensive and the shorter living varieties will reward you with an abundance of flowers. Tickseed looks good planted next to blue Giant Hyssop (Agastache) and not too tall Fountain Grass (Pennisetum).

General information about Sea Kale (Crambe):
A flowering Sea Kale (Crambe) leaves you with an unforgettable impression. A large cloud of small, beautifully scented flowers which attract a mass of insects. Because Sea Kale roots deeply, it is a drought resistant plant. It may take a few years before the first flowers appear. Sea Kale likes slight alkaline soil. If you do not have this, give it a hand full of chalk in autumn. The species 'maritima' does well in gardens along the coast. Try combining Sea Kale with grey leaved grasses like Lyme Grass (Leymus), Oat Grass (Helictotrichon) and Marram Grass (Ammophila).

The graceful foliage and the green flowers in long spikes give False Hemp an exceptional appearance. False Hemp grows easily in sun to partial shade in soil that does not dry out. False Hemp is unfortunately not very hardy. If you want to try to keep the plant in the winter, cover it with a thick pack of dead leaves or straw.

Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium) is a genus of hardy and not so hardy perennials and shrubs. The species used in the garden are hardy and form large, strong plants with nice dense, flat topped clusters of flowers. Hemp Agrimony is very suitable for in the back of the border or along large ponds. They flower quite late and attract lots of insects. They prefer a sunny position but half shade will also do. Hemp Agrimony likes a fertile soil which is always moist. A good dose of compost for these large plants in spring is always appreciated. Because of its strong stems, Hemp Agrimony will stay upright through the winter and provide a nice winter-silhouette. Good neighbour plants for Hemp Agrimony are Leopard Plant (Ligularia), Meadowsweet (Filipendula), Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum), Mountain Fleece (Persicaria amplexicaulis) and Garden Speedwell (Veronica longifolia).

If you are sensitive, always exercise caution with all species of Hogweed. Hogweed thrives best in a sunny to lightly shaded spot with well-drained, moist soil. Hogweed blooms with large umbels in summer. The flowers are attractive to bees and other insects and have a natural look. Hogweed is usually biennial and dies after flowering. Fortunately, the plant often self-seeds.

Vetchling (Lathyrus) is mainly known as an annual climber but there are also perennial Vetchling climbers and non-climbers. The species Everlasting Pea is a climber and likes a spot in the sun in fertile soil. Use some sticks, shrub or robust perennial, such as Sunflower (Helianthus), as support for Vetchling to attach to. The species Spring Vetchling forms a clump and likes to be in half shade, say next to Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera) and Hellebore (Helleborus). Vetchling does not like wet feet in the winter. Add some fresh compost around the plant annually.

General information about Tree Mallow (Lavatera):
Tree Mallow (Lavatera) is one of the most rewarding flowering plants in the garden. They grow quick and in one decent summer they can grow into a good-sized bush. Tree Mallow wants a spot in the full sun, in normal soil with enough fertilizer. Give them a hand full of fresh compost every spring. Tree Mallow will not survive a severe winter without extra protection, so cover the base of the plant with a good layer of leaves. In spring, cut Tree Mallow back to about 30 cm above ground level. Good neighbour plants for Tree Mallow are Giant Hyssop (Agastache), purple flowering Aster (Aster), Mullein (Verbascum) and Fountain Grass (Pennisetum).

General information about Moorgrass (Molinia) (Molinia):
Moorgrass (Molinia) is a clump forming hardy grass with tall upright stems. Many varieties of Moorgrass display nice autumn colours. This grass grows well in the sun or half shade in most soils as long as moist enough and not alkaline. The tall species (Molinia arundinacea) are good as solitary plants. The less tall species (Molinia caerulea) look best planted in a group or in a large pot on the patio. The open form of Moorgrass lends itself well to a natural planting, together with Aster (Aster), Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum) and Yellow Loosestrife (Lysimachia punctata). The height mentioned with the plant is the flowering height. The foliage of Moorgrass is at about one third of the flowering height.
