General information about Yarrow (Achillea):
Yarrows (Achillea) are low to high perennials for a sunny position on normal to poor soil. The foliage is feathery and the plant has a shield of small flower heads. The flowers lend themselves well for drying. It looks best when Yarrow is planted in large groups. Deadhead after flowering to prevent seed forming. This will stimulate new growth and prevent seedlings growing in the centres of the plants. These will often not be the same colour as the mother plants. Good neighbours for Yarrow are for example Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa), Helen's Flower (Helenium), Stonecrop (Sedum) and ornamental grasses.

In the winter the bulbs can rot if they are too wet. If you plant your Onion in the autumn, cover them for the first winter with a layer of leaves. With a lot of the species the leaves will dye back during the flowering period. Remember this when planting and camouflage the gaps with, for instant, ornamental grasses. Some of the smaller species of Onion can spread vigorously. These are good for in a wild garden. Onion flowers attract lots of insects and are also good cut flowers. Thrift (Armeria) is a low growing perennial. It's fine, grass-like foliage forms clumps above which the flowers sit nicely. Some species form flower stems of up to 20 cm. Thrift enjoys a sunny open position in dry to normal soil. Thrifts natural habitat is along the coast and therefore the plant is resilient to salt and also salt-spreading along roads. An ideal plant for gardeners along the coast. Good companion plants for Thrift are Thyme (Thymus), Fleabane (Erigeron), Catmint (Nepeta) and Cotton Lavender (Santolina). Removing dead flowers will lengthen the flowering period. Apart from the species 'pseudarmeria', all Thrifts are hardy.

Leadwort (Ceratostigma) has pure bright blue flowers, something we do not see too often with perennials. Leadwort likes warmth and copes well with dry spells. Therefore, it can be planted in difficult spots where you struggle with other plants. The foliage of some species of Leadwort will turn nice red in autumn. Give newly planted plants a bit of protection through the first couple of winters. To help give Leadwort a good start it is recommended to plant them in the spring. Tickseed (Coreopsis) is a genus of beautiful flowering plants for a not too fertile, well-draining soil in full sun. Tickseed is a must in a colourful flower border but also good to use in planters combined with annuals. There are lots of new varieties being introduced right now of which hardiness and longevity are not known yet. Tickseed from the groups 'lanceolata' and 'grandiflora' are short lived. You can prolong their life by cutting back the plants in late summer down to 5-10 cm above soil level. A shame if they still have flowers, but now they will put their energy into producing new shoots for spring. The most reliable Tickseed are those from the group 'verticillata'. Do not let the above put you off using Tickseed in the garden. They are not expensive and the shorter living varieties will reward you with an abundance of flowers. Tickseed looks good planted next to blue Giant Hyssop (Agastache) and not too tall Fountain Grass (Pennisetum).

Barrenwort (Epimedium) is a genus of strong perennials for in the (half)shade. In spring, the flowers float like fairies above the foliage. To see this properly you can cut away the old leaves before the new flower stems appear. Barrenwort is also nice to keep just for its foliage. Some species have bronze to red colours, others have nicely coloured foliage throughout the winter. Barrenwort is quite drought tolerant and is a good ground cover.
