General information about Bugle (Ajuga):
Bugle (Ajuga) is a carpeting evergreen perennial for in the sun or half shade. If in the sun, Bugle needs enough moisture. Bugle spreads with above ground creeping shoots and forms a nice carpet. If, after several years, you get some 'bold' patches, clear these patches and re-plant with some fresh new shoots. A great display is when you combine Bugle with blue flowers and dark foliage with orange Avens (Geum) and light blue or white Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera). This combination still looks good after flowering with its contrasting foliage.

General information about Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla):
Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla) is a good and trusted ground cover and edge plant. Cut it back strongly after flowering so it doesn't seed but produces fresh new foliage. Because Lady's Mantle has a calm and quite neutral colour, it can be combined with pretty much anything. A beautiful combination is Lady's Mantle and blue Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa) as an under growth for pink roses. The foliage of Lady's Mantle mollis is covered in very fine hairs. Dew and rain drops lie on these like little diamonds.

General information about Onion (Allium):
The genus Onion (Allium) includes many vegetables but also plenty of ornamental species. Most Onions like a sunny position in a good, slightly alkaline soil. In the winter the bulbs can rot if they are too wet. If you plant your Onion in the autumn, cover them for the first winter with a layer of leaves. With a lot of the species the leaves will dye back during the flowering period. Remember this when planting and camouflage the gaps with, for instant, ornamental grasses. Some of the smaller species of Onion can spread vigorously. These are good for in a wild garden. Onion flowers attract lots of insects and are also good cut flowers. When the tall species flower on the nursery, they sometimes are too tall to ship out. We could cut them back, but then you loss that years flower. Best to order early or contact us first.

Anemone (Anemone) is a large genus with plants for in the sun and shade, tall or small, spring and autumn. Most Anemone do well normal to good garden soil in half shade. The low Anemone usually flower in spring and recede after flowering to reappear the following spring. The taller Anemones (Japanese Anemone) usually flower in autumn and can be placed in a variety of positions. Give these taller Anemones a cover of leaves the first winter after planting. The following years they will be all right. Planted near to these Japanese Anemones, Culver's Root (Veronicastrum), Phlox (Phlox), Aster (Aster), Obedient Plant (Physostegia) and ornamental grasses look good.

Columbine happily self-seeds, which is a good thing as the plants usually only lives for a few years. The flowers of the seedling are often a different colour than that of the parent. Let yourself be surprised! If you do not want this, cut away the flower stems straight after flowering. This will also help the plant live longer. As the foliage of Columbine, after flowering, often does not look good anymore, a good idea is to plant it amongst other plants, such as Cranesbill (Geranium), Coral Bells (Heuchera), Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium), Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera) and Bellflower (Campanula).

Thrift (Armeria) is a low growing perennial. It's fine, grass-like foliage forms clumps above which the flowers sit nicely. Some species form flower stems of up to 20 cm. Thrift enjoys a sunny open position in dry to normal soil. Thrifts natural habitat is along the coast and therefore the plant is resilient to salt and also salt-spreading along roads. An ideal plant for gardeners along the coast. Good companion plants for Thrift are Thyme (Thymus), Fleabane (Erigeron), Catmint (Nepeta) and Cotton Lavender (Santolina). Removing dead flowers will lengthen the flowering period. Apart from the species 'pseudarmeria', all Thrifts are hardy.

Elephant's Ears (Bergenia) is a ground covering, usual evergreen plant whose foliage often takes on nice autumn colours. Elephant's Ears likes a spot in the sun or half shade in normal soil. They are definitely not choosy plants. Once established they are quite drought tolerant. After a few years' gaps might appear in your clumps. Digging them up and splitting the plants will cure this. They love some added compost in spring. Elephant's Ears look best when planted in larger groups and can be used for covering larger areas. Good partners for Elephant's Ears are Cranesbill (Geranium) and ornamental grasses.

General information about Leadwort (Ceratostigma):
Leadwort (Ceratostigma) has pure bright blue flowers, something we do not see too often with perennials. Leadwort likes warmth and copes well with dry spells. Therefore, it can be planted in difficult spots where you struggle with other plants. The foliage of some species of Leadwort will turn nice red in autumn. Give newly planted plants a bit of protection through the first couple of winters. To help give Leadwort a good start it is recommended to plant them in the spring. In a dry spot Leadwort combines well with White Wood Aster (Aster divaricatus) and Wood Spurge (Euphorbia amygdaloides).

Lily of the Valley will grow in less ideal spots as well, even in dryer soil, but then will not a dense mat. On less ideal soils it is good to spread a little compost between the plants in spring. Some varieties of Lily of the Valley have variegated leaves and pinkish flowers. The flowers have a lovely sweet scent and are good for in a vase. After flowering, red berries can appear which are poisonous, as is the whole plant. Good plant partners for Lily of the Valley are Lesser Periwinkle (Vinca minor), Barrenwort (Epimedium) and Navelwort (Omphalodes).

General information about Dragon's Head (Dracocephalum):
Dragon's Head (Dracocephalum) is a genus of plants related to Catmint (Nepeta). The eye-catching flowers also look like those of Catmint, but are much larger. In time Dragon's Head will form nice clumps. To help with this it is good to prune the plant back a bit after its first flowering. Dragon's Head likes a spot in the sun or half shade in a normal soil. Try combining Dragon's Head with low growing pink Asters (Aster) and grey leaved Pearly Everlasting (Anaphalis).

General information about Barrenwort (Epimedium):
Barrenwort (Epimedium) is a genus of strong perennials for in the (half)shade. In spring, the flowers float like fairies above the foliage. To see this properly you can cut away the old leaves before the new flower stems appear. Barrenwort is also nice to keep just for its foliage. Some species have bronze to red colours, others have nicely coloured foliage throughout the winter. Barrenwort is quite drought tolerant and is a good ground cover. The best ones for covering a dry area are Epimedium perralchicum 'Frohnleiten' and Epimedium rubrum. Barrenwort combine well with low growing ferns, Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera) and Lungwort (Pulmonaria).
