Most Hollyhock (Alcea) are bi-annual. They are tall, stately plants in beautiful colours. Hollyhock looks best against a fence or wall. There are now some new perennial species available which are less prone to rust on their leaves. Something that will not kill Hollyhock, but doesn't look nice. Usually these affected plants are in too moist a position. There is still some debate over the proper naming of the bi- and perennials. In our web shop we have put the perennials under the genus Mallow (Malva).

Pampas Grass (Cortaderia) is a clump forming, usually tall ornamental grass for in an open spot in the full sun in good soil. Pampas Grass has beautiful tall flower plumes and grey-green foliage with rough sharp edges. The first few years after planting it is advised to cover Pampas Grass with straw in winter, as it is not yet fully hardy. Also too much water in winter can be deadly. A good practice is to tie all the foliage up into a sheaf before the winter. This will divert excess water away from the heart of the plant and also protect against frost. Do not cut back the leaves till spring time. To give Pampas Grass a good start, it is recommended to plant Pampas Grass before the summer. Pampas Grass is beautiful as a specimen or in a grass-garden, surrounded by less tall ornamental grasses.

General information about Sunflower (Helianthus):
Sunflower (Helianthus) is best known as an annual cut flower but there are luckily also a lot of perennials. It is this last group of hardy plants we offer you in our assortment. The flowers of these species are not as large as those annuals, but you get more than one per plants. They are also goon in the vase. Sunflower is a strong growing, tall and bushy plant which requires plenty of space. Sunflower likes a spot in the sun in well-draining, good and fertile soil. It is good to add some fresh compost annually. Sunflower looks good in a country or natural garden where it will also attract lots of butterflies. For those gardeners who do not like bright yellows, there are also cultivars in cream. Combine Sunflower with tall Asters (Aster), Culver's Root (Veronicastrum), Maiden Grass (Miscanthus) and Plume Poppy (Macleaya).

General information about Maiden Grass (Miscanthus):
Maiden Grass (Miscanthus) is one of the most well-known ornamental grasses. They are clump forming, reasonably fast-growing plants which often also display nice autumn colours. The height of Maiden Grass varies from knee-height to over 2 meters. Especially nice are the varieties with striped or mottled leaves. Maiden Grass can be used as a solitary plant or in groups. Maiden Grass prefers a spot in the sun in normal soil, although some shade does not harm it either. It flowers in late summer and is quite spectacular. When gone over, the flower stems still give you a nice display over winter. Some varieties of Maiden Grass will only flower after a nice warm summer. Do not cut Maiden Grass back until spring, as soon as the young shoots are visible. Maiden Grass is a very versatile grass that should be in every garden.

General information about Moorgrass (Molinia) (Molinia):
Moorgrass (Molinia) is a clump forming hardy grass with tall upright stems. Many varieties of Moorgrass display nice autumn colours. This grass grows well in the sun or half shade in most soils as long as moist enough and not alkaline. The tall species (Molinia arundinacea) are good as solitary plants. The less tall species (Molinia caerulea) look best planted in a group or in a large pot on the patio. The open form of Moorgrass lends itself well to a natural planting, together with Aster (Aster), Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum) and Yellow Loosestrife (Lysimachia punctata). The height mentioned with the plant is the flowering height. The foliage of Moorgrass is at about one third of the flowering height.

General information about Rosinweed (Silphium):
Rosinweed (Silphium) is a genus of very easy perennials which flower for a long time. It is an impressive plant to be planted in the back of the border. Even in winter, Rosinweed adds structure as the stems stay upright. Rosinweed likes a spot in the full sun, but will also do with half shade. The soil should be normal to moist and fertile. A gift of fresh compost in spring is always appreciated. Strong neighbours for Rosinweed are Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium), Meadow Rue (Thalictrum) and Maiden Grass (Miscanthus). Rosinweed produces a good cut flower and is loved by many insects. Watch out in spring for slugs and snails eating the fresh new shoots.

General information about Meadow Rue (Thalictrum):
Meadow Rue (Thalictrum) is often kept because of its countless small flowers and its open habit. Also the beautiful blue/grey foliage of some species is especially attractive. Meadow Rue varies in size from 10 cm to over 2 meters. The tall species will need some extra support in the garden, either with a stake or with the help of strong neighbour plants. Meadow Rue likes a spot in the half shade in normal to moist soil. It will do in the sun as well as long as the soil is moist enough. If in doubt you can always dig in some extra compost. Because of its size and habit, Meadow Rue is suitable for in the natural garden or for in the back of the border. Meadow Rue is attractive to insects and is also nice in bouquets.

General information about Ironweed (Vernonia):
Ironweed (Vernonia) is a large genus of which only a few are suitable for in the garden. From a distance they resemble Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium), but close up, the flowers look like those of an Aster (Aster). Ironweed wants a place in the sun in a moist soil. It is good to mix some compost in the soil before planting and then annually give it another hand full every spring. Ironweed sits well in the back of the border with neighbours such as Goat's Beard (Aruncus), Sunflower (Helianthus), Mountain Fleece (Persicaria amplexicaulis) and Purple Moor Grass (Molinia arundinacea). Ironweed is slow to start in spring and it may take a few years to mature. Ironweed attracts many butterflies and also produces a good cut flower.
