General information about Baneberry (Actaea):
Baneberry (Actaea) is a genus of plants usually with white torch like flowers. After flowering they produce berries. Some species flower in spring, others in late summer and autumn. Many Baneberries have a lovely scent. They are plants for in a cool position and like plenty of organic matter in the soil. Baneberry grows best in half shade, in normal to moist soil. Some species have nice dark foliage. Good neighbours for Baneberry are for instance Mountain Fleece (Persicaria amplexicaulis), Monkshood (Aconitum) and Astilbe (Astilbe).

Giant Scabious (Cephalaria) is an imposing plant with lovely soft cream flowers. The flowers sit on long stems far above the foliage. Therefore, better not to plant Giant Scabious between other tall plants. Giant Scabious likes the sun and a not to moist soil. Sometimes they will self-seed. Giant Scabious looks nice in a natural planting next to Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia), Globe Thistle (Echinops) and Small Reed (Calamagrostis).

Everybody knows Clematis (Clematis) as a climbing plant but there are also some low growing species very suited to the border. In our web shop you will find the smaller and wild species of Clematis. Plant them near other plants with strong stems or let them droop over a wall. Make sure that Clematis is planted in the sun or half shade, but that the roots are shaded. You could plant a small evergreen shrub in front of it. Plant Clematis in a humus rich soil with enough drainage. Some added, dried farm manure in spring is very much appreciated.

A good practice is to tie all the foliage up into a sheaf before the winter. This will divert excess water away from the heart of the plant and also protect against frost. Do not cut back the leaves till spring time. To give Pampas Grass a good start, it is recommended to plant Pampas Grass before the summer. Larkspur (Delphinium) is a large genus of annual and perennial plants which are very much suited to the garden. They come in differing heights. The taller varieties will often need staking. Plant Larkspur in a sunny spot, in fertile soil which has plenty of organic matter. In order to keep Larkspur strong and healthy it is advised to dig them up every few years and split them. Also it is best to re-plant them somewhere else in the garden. After its first flowering, cut Larkspur well back and add some fertilizer. Often you will be treated to a second flowering in late summer. Larkspur look good planted with Day Lily (Hemerocallis), Coneflower (Echinacea) and Yarrow (Achillea). Unfortunately, slugs and snails are also attracted to Larkspur. Early in spring, spread some biological slug pellets around the plants.

Hemp Agrimony is very suitable for in the back of the border or along large ponds. They flower quite late and attract lots of insects. They prefer a sunny position but half shade will also do. Hemp Agrimony likes a fertile soil which is always moist. A good dose of compost for these large plants in spring is always appreciated. Because of its strong stems, Hemp Agrimony will stay upright through the winter and provide a nice winter-silhouette. Good neighbour plants for Hemp Agrimony are Leopard Plant (Ligularia), Meadowsweet (Filipendula), Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum), Mountain Fleece (Persicaria amplexicaulis) and Garden Speedwell (Veronica longifolia).

Rosinweed (Silphium) is a genus of very easy perennials which flower for a long time. It is an impressive plant to be planted in the back of the border. Even in winter, Rosinweed adds structure as the stems stay upright. Rosinweed likes a spot in the full sun, but will also do with half shade. The soil should be normal to moist and fertile. A gift of fresh compost in spring is always appreciated. Strong neighbours for Rosinweed are Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium), Meadow Rue (Thalictrum) and Maiden Grass (Miscanthus). Rosinweed produces a good cut flower and is loved by many insects. Watch out in spring for slugs and snails eating the fresh new shoots.

General information about Ironweed (Vernonia):
Ironweed (Vernonia) is a large genus of which only a few are suitable for in the garden. From a distance they resemble Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium), but close up, the flowers look like those of an Aster (Aster). Ironweed wants a place in the sun in a moist soil. It is good to mix some compost in the soil before planting and then annually give it another hand full every spring. Ironweed sits well in the back of the border with neighbours such as Goat's Beard (Aruncus), Sunflower (Helianthus), Mountain Fleece (Persicaria amplexicaulis) and Purple Moor Grass (Molinia arundinacea). Ironweed is slow to start in spring and it may take a few years to mature. Ironweed attracts many butterflies and also produces a good cut flower.

General information about Mullein (Verbascum):
Mullein (Verbascum) is a genus of plants that deliver a beautiful vertical accent to the garden. Some Mullein are perennial, others behave as bi- or even tri-annual. Very broadly speaking, you can say that the tallest varieties will die after flowering and that the lower varieties will survive for a few years. The short-lived varieties self-seed easily, so you will not be without. There are many new cultivars of Mullein being brought to the market which still have to prove themselves. Mullein of the varieties nigrum and chaixii are usually perennial. Mullein likes a spot in the sun in dry to normal soil which drains well. If you do not want them to self-seed, cut away the flower stems after flowering. This might also lengthen the lifespan of short-lived varieties. Mullein is good in the natural garden but also in the border.
