Yarrows (Achillea) are low to high perennials for a sunny position on normal to poor soil. The foliage is feathery and the plant has a shield of small flower heads. The flowers lend themselves well for drying. It looks best when Yarrow is planted in large groups. Deadhead after flowering to prevent seed forming. This will stimulate new growth and prevent seedlings growing in the centres of the plants. These will often not be the same colour as the mother plants. Good neighbours for Yarrow are for example Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa), Helen's Flower (Helenium), Stonecrop (Sedum) and ornamental grasses.

General information about African Lily (Agapanthus):
The genus African Lily (Agapanthus) originates from South Africa. They are valued for their beautiful flower heads that rise above the foliage in summer. Due to their origin, Agapanthus are not fully hardy in our climate, although hardiness varies greatly between species. An important characteristic here is whether the plants lose their leaves in autumn or keep them. The deciduous species of Agapanthus are generally fairly hardy. With a protective layer of straw or dead leaves, they can remain in the garden during the winter. Ensure good drainage and preferably plant them in the spring so that they can form a strong root system before winter. If this is not possible, cover them extra well during the first winter. The evergreen varieties of Agapanthus can only tolerate light frost and are therefore better kept in pots, which can be stored frost-free during the winter. Each variety in our webshop is noted as either a deciduous or evergreen variety of Agapanthus. Agapanthus have thick, fleshy roots. It is a myth that Agapanthus must be kept in a cramped pot; in fact, they should be given a larger pot in which the plant can develop well. For abundant flowering, Agapanthus needs sufficient nutrition in addition to a sunny spot. Strawberry fertilizer in granule form has a good composition to serve as nutrition for Agapanthus.

General information about Onion (Allium):
The genus Onion (Allium) includes many vegetables but also plenty of ornamental species. Most Onions like a sunny position in a good, slightly alkaline soil. In the winter the bulbs can rot if they are too wet. If you plant your Onion in the autumn, cover them for the first winter with a layer of leaves. With a lot of the species the leaves will dye back during the flowering period. Remember this when planting and camouflage the gaps with, for instant, ornamental grasses. Some of the smaller species of Onion can spread vigorously. These are good for in a wild garden. Onion flowers attract lots of insects and are also good cut flowers. When the tall species flower on the nursery, they sometimes are too tall to ship out. We could cut them back, but then you loss that years flower. Best to order early or contact us first.

Sometimes you will get a second flush of flowers in late summer. It must be said that Alkanet is not a plant that will live forever, but because of its lovely colour is unmissable in the border. General information about Anemone (Anemone):
Anemone (Anemone) is a large genus with plants for in the sun and shade, tall or small, spring and autumn. Most Anemone do well normal to good garden soil in half shade. The low Anemone usually flower in spring and recede after flowering to reappear the following spring. Therefore, these low growing species suit themselves well for planting under shrubs or between taller growing perennials such as Hosta's (Hosta) and ferns. The taller Anemones (Japanese Anemone) usually flower in autumn and can be placed in a variety of positions. Give these taller Anemones a cover of leaves the first winter after planting. The following years they will be all right. Planted near to these Japanese Anemones, Culver's Root (Veronicastrum), Phlox (Phlox), Aster (Aster), Obedient Plant (Physostegia) and ornamental grasses look good.

General information about Mugwort (Artemisia):
Most Mugworts (Artemisia) have grey-green foliage and because of this are often used between plants with vibrant colours to create some rest in a border. All species of Mugwort like a sunny position in a somewhat dry, well graining soil. Make sure the plants do not have wet feet in the winter. Mugwort is a true foliage plant. Apart from the species 'lactiflora' the flowers of Mugwort are of little value.

General information about False Indigo (Baptisia):
False Indigo (Baptisia)'s are Lupin-like plants with thick, strong roots. This is one of the reasons it can take a few years for these plants to fully mature. Once established, it will last for years. Better not to keep moving it about. Many species of False Indigo produce apart from pea-like flowers also nice pea pods which stay on the plant for a long time. False Indigo likes a spot in the sun or light shade in a normal to dry soil. In acidic soil the plant will struggle. A lot of new colours have come to market in the last few years, so you should find a right colour for any border. False Indigo is very good for in a prairie garden, combined with Helen's Flower (Helenium) and ornamental grasses. In the past the foliage of False Indigo was used to produce a bleu dye.

General information about Small Reed (Calamagrostis):
Small Reed (Calamagrostis) is a group of upright tall grasses which flower in summer. After that the clumps turn golden brown and stay attractive into the winter. Small Reed likes a spot in the sun, in dry to normal, not too fertile soil. Not enough sun or too much fertilizer will make for weak, arching plants. Small Reed looks great planted as a solitary plant. Why not plant a group of 3 or 5 plants in the flower border to create a vertical accent next to Beebalm (Monarda), Coneflower (Echinacea), Aster (Aster), Giant Hyssop (Agastache) and Goldenrod (Solidago).

General information about Camas (Camassia):
Camas (Camassia) is a bulbous perennial that likes a fertile and moist soil. Being bulbous, they flower quite early on and therefore are good in the border where they will flower before most other perennials. Camas looks good planted in groups of minimal 3 plants. Apparently, the bulbs are supposed to be edible (quamash). After flowering the plant disappears underground till the next spring. Therefore, plant Camas close next to other plants that will fill the vacant spot, such as Day Lily (Hemerocallis), Hairgrass (Deschampsia) or Meadow Cranesbill (Geranium pratense). In very hard winters a good layer of mulch will safeguard your Camas bulbs.

We all know Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum) as cut flowers, but there are also many varieties available as hardy plants for in the garden. This group you will find in our on-line shop. Chrysanthemums are available in a variety of colours and shapes, singles, doubles or pom-pom. Because they flower late in the season, they are very useful in the border, in a sunny to lightly shaded spot in a well-draining soil. Best plant Chrysanthemum before the summer so that they have plenty of time to establish properly before winter. If you do plant Chrysanthemum in late summer, best to cover the plants with a layer of straw or leaves in winter. Taller varieties of Chrysanthemum can be topped in early summer to produce bushier plants.

General information about Bamboo Grass (Chasmanthium):
Bamboo Grass (Chasmanthium) differs from most grasses because of its panicles. It's like they have been flattened with an iron. The foliage of Bamboo Grass resembles that of bamboo. Bamboo Grass is relatively unknown, and that is a shame as it is a welcome addition to the border. Good partners are Mountain Fleece (Persicaria amplexicaulis), Japanese Anemone (Anemone), Monkshood (Aconitum) and Astilbe (Astilbe). Bamboo Grass is also very useful as a cut flower, fresh or dried. Bamboo Grass tolerates full sun but will also thrive in half shade and prefers a good soil which is normal to slightly moist. The variegated variant of Bamboo Grass is less strong than the normal one.

Montbretia is a 'must have' in the border, great combined with Helen's Flower (Helenium), Giant Hyssop (Agastache), Coneflower (Rudbeckia) and ornamental grasses. Montbretia is also a good cut flower. Plant in the sun in a well-draining, normal soil. If too wet, especially in winter, the corms of Montbretia will rot away. Plant the corms quite deep, the bottom of them at 15-20 cm. This will help the hardiness as when planted too shallow they can frost. Also covering with a layer of leaves in winter will safeguard them. If you have a wet garden it is advisable to dig the corms of Montbretia up in late autumn and re-plant in spring.

General information about Hairgrass (Deschampsia):
Hairgrass (Deschampsia) is a genus of mainly evergreen grasses. They have attractive plumes of masses of flowers and put on a nice show in winter. Hairgrass is a strong grass that looks great when planted in larger groups. They do appreciate some compost worked into the soil. Hairgrass likes a spot in the sun or half shade. There are a few varieties with coloured foliage, but these eventually tend to revert back to normal green. Hairgrass can self-seed. You can prevent this happening by cutting away the pinnacles when they have finished flowering. Hairgrass looks good in a natural planting together with Astilbe (Astilbe) and Coneflower (Rudbeckia).
