General information about African Lily (Agapanthus):
The genus African Lily (Agapanthus) originates from South Africa. They are valued for their beautiful flower heads that rise above the foliage in summer. Due to their origin, Agapanthus are not fully hardy in our climate, although hardiness varies greatly between species. An important characteristic here is whether the plants lose their leaves in autumn or keep them. The deciduous species of Agapanthus are generally fairly hardy. With a protective layer of straw or dead leaves, they can remain in the garden during the winter. Ensure good drainage and preferably plant them in the spring so that they can form a strong root system before winter. If this is not possible, cover them extra well during the first winter. The evergreen varieties of Agapanthus can only tolerate light frost and are therefore better kept in pots, which can be stored frost-free during the winter. Each variety in our webshop is noted as either a deciduous or evergreen variety of Agapanthus. Agapanthus have thick, fleshy roots. It is a myth that Agapanthus must be kept in a cramped pot; in fact, they should be given a larger pot in which the plant can develop well. For abundant flowering, Agapanthus needs sufficient nutrition in addition to a sunny spot. Strawberry fertilizer in granule form has a good composition to serve as nutrition for Agapanthus.

For abundant flowering, Agapanthus needs sufficient nutrition in addition to a sunny spot. Strawberry fertilizer in granule form has a good composition to serve as nutrition for Agapanthus.

In the winter the bulbs can rot if they are too wet. If you plant your Onion in the autumn, cover them for the first winter with a layer of leaves. With a lot of the species the leaves will dye back during the flowering period. Remember this when planting and camouflage the gaps with, for instant, ornamental grasses. Some of the smaller species of Onion can spread vigorously. These are good for in a wild garden. Onion flowers attract lots of insects and are also good cut flowers. When the tall species flower on the nursery, they sometimes are too tall to ship out. We could cut them back, but then you loss that years flower. Best to order early or contact us first.

Sometimes you will get a second flush of flowers in late summer. It must be said that Alkanet is not a plant that will live forever, but because of its lovely colour is unmissable in the border. Anemone (Anemone) is a large genus with plants for in the sun and shade, tall or small, spring and autumn. Most Anemone do well normal to good garden soil in half shade. The low Anemone usually flower in spring and recede after flowering to reappear the following spring. Therefore, these low growing species suit themselves well for planting under shrubs or between taller growing perennials such as Hosta's (Hosta) and ferns. The taller Anemones (Japanese Anemone) usually flower in autumn and can be placed in a variety of positions. Give these taller Anemones a cover of leaves the first winter after planting. The following years they will be all right. Planted near to these Japanese Anemones, Culver's Root (Veronicastrum), Phlox (Phlox), Aster (Aster), Obedient Plant (Physostegia) and ornamental grasses look good.

General information about Mugwort (Artemisia):
Most Mugworts (Artemisia) have grey-green foliage and because of this are often used between plants with vibrant colours to create some rest in a border. All species of Mugwort like a sunny position in a somewhat dry, well graining soil. Make sure the plants do not have wet feet in the winter. Mugwort is a true foliage plant. Apart from the species 'lactiflora' the flowers of Mugwort are of little value.

General information about Astilbe (Astilbe):
Astilbes (Astilbe) comes in many varieties, from small to large. Most like a place in half shade in moist soil. Astilbe-varieties from the chinensis group are more sun and drought tolerant then the others. An annual gift of some compost is appreciated. Astilbe looks best when planted in larger groups. A good plant for in the border as well as in a wild garden. After flowering, the flower stems look nice when left throughout winter. Use Coral Bells (Heuchera), Monkshood (Aconitum) and Sedge (Carex) as good neighbour plants for Astilbe.

They will tolerate the sun as long as kept moist enough, for example near a pond. It takes a few years for Shieldleaf to mature. Use the large flat leaves as a nice contrast to large ferns from the genus Shield Fern (Polystichum) or Male Fern (Dryopteris).

Lady Fern (Athyrium) belongs to a genus of ferns that are found all over the world. There are species with nice foliage in the colours grey, purple and red. In our climate Lady Ferns are usually deciduous. Its preferred position is in a medium moist, humus rich, slightly acidic soil, but having said that, they are not fussy. Lady Ferns will form loose clumps over time but are not invasive. They go well in a shadow garden, for instance as under planting with Rhododendron or next to blue Hosta's (Hosta).

General information about False Indigo (Baptisia):
False Indigo (Baptisia)'s are Lupin-like plants with thick, strong roots. This is one of the reasons it can take a few years for these plants to fully mature. Once established, it will last for years. Better not to keep moving it about. Many species of False Indigo produce apart from pea-like flowers also nice pea pods which stay on the plant for a long time. False Indigo likes a spot in the sun or light shade in a normal to dry soil. In acidic soil the plant will struggle. A lot of new colours have come to market in the last few years, so you should find a right colour for any border. False Indigo is very good for in a prairie garden, combined with Helen's Flower (Helenium) and ornamental grasses. In the past the foliage of False Indigo was used to produce a bleu dye.

General information about Small Reed (Calamagrostis):
Small Reed (Calamagrostis) is a group of upright tall grasses which flower in summer. After that the clumps turn golden brown and stay attractive into the winter. Small Reed likes a spot in the sun, in dry to normal, not too fertile soil. Not enough sun or too much fertilizer will make for weak, arching plants. Small Reed looks great planted as a solitary plant. Why not plant a group of 3 or 5 plants in the flower border to create a vertical accent next to Beebalm (Monarda), Coneflower (Echinacea), Aster (Aster), Giant Hyssop (Agastache) and Goldenrod (Solidago).

General information about Camas (Camassia):
Camas (Camassia) is a bulbous perennial that likes a fertile and moist soil. Being bulbous, they flower quite early on and therefore are good in the border where they will flower before most other perennials. Camas looks good planted in groups of minimal 3 plants. Apparently, the bulbs are supposed to be edible (quamash). After flowering the plant disappears underground till the next spring. Therefore, plant Camas close next to other plants that will fill the vacant spot, such as Day Lily (Hemerocallis), Hairgrass (Deschampsia) or Meadow Cranesbill (Geranium pratense). In very hard winters a good layer of mulch will safeguard your Camas bulbs.
