General information about Yarrow (Achillea):
Yarrows (Achillea) are low to high perennials for a sunny position on normal to poor soil. The foliage is feathery and the plant has a shield of small flower heads. The flowers lend themselves well for drying. It looks best when Yarrow is planted in large groups. Deadhead after flowering to prevent seed forming. This will stimulate new growth and prevent seedlings growing in the centres of the plants. These will often not be the same colour as the mother plants. Good neighbours for Yarrow are for example Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa), Helen's Flower (Helenium), Stonecrop (Sedum) and ornamental grasses.

General information about Onion (Allium):
The genus Onion (Allium) includes many vegetables but also plenty of ornamental species. Most Onions like a sunny position in a good, slightly alkaline soil. In the winter the bulbs can rot if they are too wet. If you plant your Onion in the autumn, cover them for the first winter with a layer of leaves. With a lot of the species the leaves will dye back during the flowering period. Remember this when planting and camouflage the gaps with, for instant, ornamental grasses. Some of the smaller species of Onion can spread vigorously. These are good for in a wild garden. Onion flowers attract lots of insects and are also good cut flowers. When the tall species flower on the nursery, they sometimes are too tall to ship out. We could cut them back, but then you loss that years flower. Best to order early or contact us first.

General information about Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla):

Because Lady's Mantle has a calm and quite neutral colour, it can be combined with pretty much anything. A beautiful combination is Lady's Mantle and blue Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa) as an under growth for pink roses. The foliage of Lady's Mantle mollis is covered in very fine hairs. Dew and rain drops lie on these like little diamonds.

Fescue (Festuca) is a clump forming grass for in a sandy, poor and slightly acidic soil. They enjoy full sunshine. If too wet or in too fertile soil, the plants will not live for long. In a good position Fescue will keep going for years and the only task will be just cleaning them up a bit in spring. Fescues not generally kept for their flowers, although a few species do have nice flowers. Their main attraction is because of their foliage: blue to green and some with some added red. Fescue looks good in a modern garden with white or orange gravel. Several plants in a large trough also looks good. Watering is hardly necessary. Because of the relaxing colour, Fescue combines well with Sun Rose (Helianthemum), Carnation (Dianthus), Bloody Cranesbill (Geranium sanguineum), Shrubby Gromwell (Lithodora) or Stonecrop (Sedum).

Loosestrife (Lysimachia) comes in a great variety of sorts. There are low, creeping but also tall upright species in the colours yellow, white and purple. Also cultivars have been grown with brown or variegated leaves. Normally, Loosestrife wants a moist, slightly acidic soil in the sun or half shade. Some species can become invasive, such as the Yellow Loosestrife (Lysimachia punctata). This is not a problem in a natural planting, but in the border, we would install a root barrier. Loosestrife is a perfect plant for in the border which will combine with many other plants.

General information about Catmint (Nepeta):
Catmint (Nepeta) is a genus of herb-like plants, often with grey/green foliage and blue or white flowers. Most species of Catmint like sunshine and a well-draining, dry to normal soil. Too fertile soil will give weak, hanging plants. Catmint flowers for a long time and most species are good nectar suppliers to bees. Some species are also attracted to cats, mainly from the 'faassenii' group. You could always plant them next to some plants that cats dislike, such as Rue (Ruta), Rock Cranesbill (Geranium macrorrhizum) and Golden Buttons (Tanacetum vulgare). Cut Catmint back to half its height after its first flowering to prevent self-seeding and to stimulate a second flowering. Catmint can be used in many places in the garden, as an edging to paths, in borders and in a natural planting. Catmints are calm to the eye and will combine with many other plants. Nice is combined with soft yellow Chamomile (Anthemis) and Feather Grass (Stipa).

Star-of-Bethlehem (Ornithogalum) is a genus of bulbous perennials usually with star-shaped flowers. Some species are mainly grown for use in floristry. These are usually not hardy. Plant these species in a pot and winter them frost free. Luckily for us there are also fully hardy species. In the right position Star-of-Bethlehem will spread nicely through young bulbs or seed. Star-of-Bethlehem is good to use under shrubs and between not too tall other plants. A few species have foliage that will die back after flowering. Good neighbour plants for Star-of-Bethlehem are Bugle (Ajuga), Water Avens (Geum rivale) and Bluebell (Hyacinthoides).

Once established, these species of Knotweed only need a tidy up in spring and some fresh compost annually. The species Fleeceflower (Persicaria microcephala) and Jumpseed (Persicaria virginiana) are mainly used because of their beautiful foliage in the border or for flower arranging. Knotweed has many uses and should be present in every garden. Insects are also charmed by Knotweed.

On the whole, Stonecrop like a spot in the sun in quite dry, poor soil. Too much moisture in winter must be avoided. The low varieties of Stonecrop are ideal ground covers. The taller varieties belong in the border where they will attract a lot of insects. Digging these Stonecrop ones up and splitting them every few years will ensure they stay healthy and strong. Some tall varieties of Stonecrop are prone to toppling over. Cut these ones back by half in June. They will then branch and grow less tall, resulting in more but smaller flowers. Stonecrop combines well with Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa), SidHollyhock, Blazing Star (Liatris) and Fountain Grass (Pennisetum). Also Baby's Breath (Gypsophila paniculata) and Bee Blossom (Gaura), with their open growth look good next to Stonecrop.

Stitchwort (Stellaria) is a genus of plants from the Carnation (Dianthus) family. Just about all have lying stems and white flowers. There are only a few species of Stitchwort suitable for in the garden. Stitchwort is best for in the woodland garden or in hedges, in light to half shade. The soil may be dry to normal. A nice combination is with Hosta (Hosta) or Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera). Also in troughs on the balcony Stitchwort does well and will hang nicely over the edges. Then you could plant Stitchwort together with Serbian Bellflower (Campanula poscharskyana) or Bloody Cranesbill (Geranium sanguineum).

General information about Comfrey (Symphytum):
Comfrey (Symphytum) has thick root stocks, hairy foliage and tube-shaped flowers. They grow fast and are perfect plants to suppress weeds in difficult places. If you do not wish them to spread too much, just install a root barrier. Comfrey likes a spot in the half shade and moist soil, but really is not fussy at all. If in the full sunshine the plant will need more moisture. If you want to (re)move Comfrey, make sure you remove all the bits of the roots as they will just grow again. If the foliage get a bit ugly through the summer, just cut the plant well back. Add a hand full of compost, water, and the plant will soon shoot again. Comfrey look best in a natural planting or alongside a pond or forest edge. Plant Comfrey next to strong plants such as Leopard Plant (Ligularia), Baneberry (Actaea), White Wood Aster (Aster divaricatus) and Goat's Beard (Aruncus).

The taller species of Speedwell are great in the border and combine well with Tickseed (Coreopsis), Masterwort (Astrantia), Ox-eye Daisy (Leucanthemum) and Yarrow (Achillea). Native Plants - Wild Flowers

The native plants in our webshop are native to the Netherlands. This is because we work from the Netherlands and have our nursery there. However, many of the plants are also native to our neighbouring countries. Native Dutch wild plants officially only include plants that have always been found or occur in the wild in the Netherlands. There are also naturalised plants. These are plants that are not originally native to the Netherlands, but have been established for centuries. They can survive and reproduce spontaneously in the Netherlands. We also include these plants among the native plants in our shop.

Native wild plants increase the diversity of species in your garden. They are a source of food for beetles, bees, butterflies and many other insects. Some insects are even dependent on one or a few species of native plants. If these plant species are no longer present, there is a risk that these insects will also disappear.
By using native plants in your garden, you are helping to preserve the wildlife in your neighbourhood!

A major advantage of native wild plants is that they are often more resistant to extreme weather conditions and diseases than cultivated plants. They also require less attention in the garden and usually do not need additional fertilisation.

Native wild plants combine well with cultivated plants. Just make sure that you choose cultivated plants with a natural appearance and unfilled flowers. With a good mix of plants, you can enjoy flowering plants almost all year round.

Enjoy the beauty of native plants and the insect species they attract!
