If, after several years, you get some 'bold' patches, clear these patches and re-plant with some fresh new shoots. A great display is when you combine Ajuga with blue flowers and dark foliage with orange Geum and light blue or white Brunnera. This combination still looks good after flowering with its contrasting foliage.
