General information about Bugle (Ajuga):
Bugle (Ajuga) is a carpeting evergreen perennial for in the sun or half shade. If in the sun, Bugle needs enough moisture. Bugle spreads with above ground creeping shoots and forms a nice carpet. If, after several years, you get some 'bold' patches, clear these patches and re-plant with some fresh new shoots. A great display is when you combine Bugle with blue flowers and dark foliage with orange Avens (Geum) and light blue or white Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera). This combination still looks good after flowering with its contrasting foliage.

General information about Onion (Allium):
The genus Onion (Allium) includes many vegetables but also plenty of ornamental species. Most Onions like a sunny position in a good, slightly alkaline soil. In the winter the bulbs can rot if they are too wet. If you plant your Onion in the autumn, cover them for the first winter with a layer of leaves. With a lot of the species the leaves will dye back during the flowering period. Remember this when planting and camouflage the gaps with, for instant, ornamental grasses. Some of the smaller species of Onion can spread vigorously. These are good for in a wild garden. Onion flowers attract lots of insects and are also good cut flowers. When the tall species flower on the nursery, they sometimes are too tall to ship out. We could cut them back, but then you loss that years flower. Best to order early or contact us first.

General information about Rockcress (Arabis):
Rockcress (Arabis) is a genus of perennial, mostly evergreen plants, often used as an edging plant. Also, very good as a rockery plant. As long as planted in well-draining soil and in a sunny position, Rockcress will be happy. Half-shade is possible, but will affect the number of flowers. Cutting back after flowering helps a nice compact growth and keeps Rockcress healthy.

General information about Elephant's Ears (Bergenia):
Elephant's Ears (Bergenia) is a ground covering, usual evergreen plant whose foliage often takes on nice autumn colours. Elephant's Ears likes a spot in the sun or half shade in normal soil. They are definitely not choosy plants. Once established they are quite drought tolerant. After a few years' gaps might appear in your clumps. Digging them up and splitting the plants will cure this. They love some added compost in spring. Elephant's Ears look best when planted in larger groups and can be used for covering larger areas. Good partners for Elephant's Ears are Cranesbill (Geranium) and ornamental grasses.

Apart from the 'normal' yellow Marsh Marigold, we all know from the wild, there are now also some white, double flowered varieties on the market. Good neighbour plants for Marsh Marigold are Lobelia (Lobelia), Water Forget-me-not (Myosotis palustris) and Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum).

It is good to prune the whole plant back a bit after flowering to promote a compact growth.

General information about Lily of the Valley (Convallaria):
Lily of the Valley's (Convallaria) are perennials which can spread rapidly in a shady place and in fertile, humus rich soil. Sometimes they form such thick mats that they need thinning out. Lily of the Valley will grow in less ideal spots as well, even in dryer soil, but then will not a dense mat. On less ideal soils it is good to spread a little compost between the plants in spring. Some varieties of Lily of the Valley have variegated leaves and pinkish flowers. The flowers have a lovely sweet scent and are good for in a vase. After flowering, red berries can appear which are poisonous, as is the whole plant. Good plant partners for Lily of the Valley are Lesser Periwinkle (Vinca minor), Barrenwort (Epimedium) and Navelwort (Omphalodes).

General information about Hardy Cyclamen (Cyclamen):
Hardy Cyclamen (Cyclamen), who does not know them as the pot plant in grandma's window? There are also 'wild' and hardy species on the market. The plants are tuberous. Do not plant Hardy Cyclamen too deep and cover them up a little in their first winter. They want a spot in the half shade in humus rich soil and not too wet in the winter. Hardy Cyclamen easily cross pollinate, therefore the flowers and foliage can be quite variable. During the summer Hardy Cyclamen can go into a rest period and lose their leaves, only to re-appear freshly before flowering.

General information about Barrenwort (Epimedium):
Barrenwort (Epimedium) is a genus of strong perennials for in the (half)shade. In spring, the flowers float like fairies above the foliage. To see this properly you can cut away the old leaves before the new flower stems appear. Barrenwort is also nice to keep just for its foliage. Some species have bronze to red colours, others have nicely coloured foliage throughout the winter. Barrenwort is quite drought tolerant and is a good ground cover. The best ones for covering a dry area are Epimedium perralchicum 'Frohnleiten' and Epimedium rubrum. Barrenwort combine well with low growing ferns, Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera) and Lungwort (Pulmonaria).

General information about Dog's Tooth Violet (Erythronium):
Dog's Tooth Violet (Erythronium) gets its common name from its long-pointed toothlike bulbs. It is a lovely bulb plant that in the right position will self-seed and form nice groups. Dog's Tooth Violet like a spot in half shade in normal, humus rich soil. Apart from pretty flowers many species also have nicely marked foliage. Protect Dog's Tooth Violet with a layer of leaves in its first winter. It may take a couple of years for Dog's Tooth Violet to get properly established. Sometimes Dog's Tooth Violet is offered as bulbs. This is fine, but the bulbs are very prone to drying out. We only offer Dog's Tooth Violet which we have grown in a pot and do not have that risk.

General information about Spurge (Euphorbia):
Spurge (Euphorbia) is one of the larges geneses on earth. It includes hardy, tropical, deciduous, etc. The deciduous species we have in Europe are fully hardy. This cannot be said for the evergreen species. They need a warm and sunny spot. Spurge has milky sap. Some people might be allergic to this, so be careful. Sometimes this milky sap is used against warts. There will be a kind of Spurge suitable for every single garden. Most species of Spurge will do ok in half shade. Use neighbour plants with blue flowers, this looks good against the green/yellow flowers of Spurge.
