Late summer and autumn are often neglected as gardening seasons...

At the end of summer, gardening work is often reduced to a minimum. Many people think that late summer and autumn are not suitable periods for changes in the garden, but this is not the case!
Nazomer Vaste Planten
In the past, changes were made in late season and new plants were given a place in the garden. Today, the emphasis is more on spring, while it is better for many plants to be planted now.

The advantages of planting perennials, ornamental grasses and ferns in late summer and autumn:

√  It's good to see where you want to change something in the garden or where there are holes in the planting. In spring, this is not so immediately visible (or you may have forgotten about it in the meantime).
√  In the late season, the soil is still warm and moist. This makes it easier for the plants to take root.
√  The plants no longer need to survive in extremely warm or dry weather conditions. The humidity in autumn is also more favourable for a good start.
√  In spring, perennials need a lot of energy to grow upwards and flower. This is not necessary in autumn. Then the plants can concentrate on root growth.
√  The range of perennials is large. Plants grown in early summer are in excellent condition for moving into your garden in late summer and autumn.
√  You can possibly combine planting perennials with planting flower bulbs.

You should cover plants that you plant from mid-October with leaves or straw in the first winter. This will prevent the roots from being damaged by severe frost.

Of course, there are also perennials that you can wait until spring to plant because they do not tolerate our winters well. These include some types of verbena, fuchsia, salvia and bearded iris. In our webshop, we indicate for each plant approximately how much frost it can tolerate.
