Bluestem

Bluestem  (Schizachyrium)

Bluestem (Schizachyrium) belongs to a genus of grasses which come from all over the world. The species Little Bluestern (Schizachyrium scoparium) with its cultivars are beautiful grasses for in the garden. Many of the varieties have grey or blue/green leaves which colour to purple, brown/red and orange in autumn. Bluestem forms nice plumes which stay upright well into the winter. Bluestem likes a spot in the sun in a fertile, well-draining soil which is dry to normally moist. Why not plant Coneflower (Rudbeckia), a nice warm coloured Yarrow (Achillea), Helen's Flower (Helenium) or Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia) next to it. Bluestem will also do well in a large pot on the patio.
