Camassia

Camassia - Camas

Camassia is a bulbous perennial that likes a fertile and moist soil. Being bulbous, they flower quite early on and therefore are good in the border where they will flower before most other perennials. Camassia looks good planted in groups of minimal 3 plants. Apparently, the bulbs are supposed to be edible (quamash). After flowering the plant disappears underground till the next spring. Therefore, plant Camassia close next to other plants that will fill the vacant spot, such as Hemerocallis, Deschampsia or Geranium pratense. In very hard winters a good layer of mulch will safeguard your Camassia bulbs.
