Christmas Box

Christmas Box  (Sarcococca)

Christmas Box (Sarcococca) is a genus of evergreen half shrubs. They flower very early in the year, often still in the winter. The flowers are small but have a lovely scent. The flowers are often followed by juicy black berries. Christmas Box likes a spot in the half shade in normal soil. Once established, Christmas Box will stand a period of drought quite well and also more shade. A very good plant for in a difficult location. The low species 'hookeriana var. humilis' has small leaves and forms nice thick mats. If your Christmas Box becomes ugly after some years, just cut it well back and give it some fresh compost in spring.
