Dahlia

Dahlia  (Dahlia)

Dahlias (Dahlia) come in all sorts of colors and shapes. There are over 20.000 cultivated varieties. There are special Dahlia associations for enthusiasts. Dahlias originate from Mexico. They are therefore not hardy in our climate. Harvest the tubers in autumn, after the first frost, and overwinter in a cool place. Plant the Dahlia tubers in spring in a spot in full sun in fertile soil. When planting out, add dried cow dung to the soil. Watch out for late frosts and snails. Once there are five or six side leaves on the Dahlia plant, remove the head from the plant. New shoots will then grow from the axils of the leaves, which will provide even more flowers. To prevent the Dahlias from falling over, you can place brushwood or bamboo sticks around the plants. During the flowering period, the soil in which the Dahlias are placed must not dry out. Dahlia is a good cut flower and blooms for a long time if the faded flowers are regularly removed (deadheading).
