Giant Rhubarb

Giant Rhubarb  (Gunnera)

Giant Rhubarb (Gunnera) is a perennial for in moist, rich soil in the sun or half shade. They are massive, clump forming plants with some of the largest leaves of all plants. Also the flowers are impressive. Giant Rhubarb is beautiful as a solitary plant on the water's edge. Ideally plant Giant Rhubarb in early summer. The soil will have warmed up a bit and the plant will have the rest of the season to establish. Giant Rhubarb needs a good winter covering. Hammer in some stakes around it, circle with wire netting and fill with leaves. Annually, feed the plants to keep growth sustained. Good partners for Giant Rhubarb are Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium), Knotweed (Persicaria), Marsh Fern (Thelypteris), Goat's Beard (Aruncus) and Meadow Rue (Thalictrum).
