General information about Foxtail Grass (Alopecurus):
The genus Foxtail Grass (Alopecurus) consists of both annual and perennial grasses. Used in gardens are mainly the perennial Foxtail Grass with yellow variegated leaves. Foxtail Grass forms tufts of flat leaves and long flower-stems resembling a fox's tail. To keep the plants healthy, it is recommended to split these every couple of years. Foxtail Grass grows happily in most soils, preferably in the sun, but is not choosy.

Columbines (Aquilegia) are clump forming plants for in a humus rich soil in the half-shade to full sun. Most species are shades of blue but also available are red, white and yellow. Columbine happily self-seeds, which is a good thing as the plants usually only lives for a few years. The flowers of the seedling are often a different colour than that of the parent. Let yourself be surprised! If you do not want this, cut away the flower stems straight after flowering. This will also help the plant live longer. As the foliage of Columbine, after flowering, often does not look good anymore, a good idea is to plant it amongst other plants, such as Cranesbill (Geranium), Coral Bells (Heuchera), Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium), Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera) and Bellflower (Campanula).

False Oat Grass (Arrhenatherum) is a low growing ornamental grass of which the variegated variety is nice. It grows best in a sunny to light shaded position in somewhat alkaline soil and is quite drought tolerant. False Oat Grass forms tuber like growths at the base of the leaf stems. These can be used to plant up again in a different position. If the foliage dries and doesn't look good in the summer, just cut back and the False Oat Grass will soon produce fresh foliage again. If the soil is not too dry, you can create a nice contrast of foliage with Elephant's Ears (Bergenia).

General information about Giant Reed (Arundo):
Giant Reed (Arundo) is a bamboo-like grass. They are large plants with tall stems and large leaves. Giant Reed needs a lot of space and best restrict its spreading rhizomes. They like a well-draining soil which doesn't dry out. For thousands of years Giant Reed has been used to make walking sticks, fishing rods and flutes. Even now, Giant Reed is still used in certain wind-instruments. Give the plant some extra protection during the first couple of winters. After that it will be fine. In spring, cut last year's foliage back. A good companion plant for Giant Reed is Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium). The variegated Giant Reeds will stay somewhat smaller but are also less hardy.

Hard Fern (Blechnum) is a genus of strong, slow growing ferns. They can be found all over the world. The plant forms two types of leaves; with or without spores. Hard Fern prefer a medium moist, acidic, humus rich soil in the half-shade. This sounds quite fussy, and as they are so strong they will grow all right in most soils. General information about Hellebore (Helleborus):
Hellebore (Helleborus) is a group of evergreen or deciduous perennials which flower late in winter or early spring. If the foliage has become ugly in the winter just cut it away as soon as the plant starts flowering. This will also show off the flowers much better. Hellebore wants a spot in the half shade in normal, well-draining, humus rich soil. A hand full of grit every year is appreciated if the soil is not alkaline. Most varieties of Hellebore are grown from seed and sometimes the colours might not come true. If Hellebore self-seeds in the garden you could end up with a whole range of variants. Combine Hellebore with other spring flowering plants such as Lungwort (Pulmonaria), Primrose (Primula), Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa) and Onion (Allium). Also winter-green Sedge (Carex) and early sprouting ferns are a good mix. All varieties of Hellebore are poisonous.
