General information about Fescue (Festuca):
Fescue (Festuca) is a clump forming grass for in a sandy, poor and slightly acidic soil. They enjoy full sunshine. If too wet or in too fertile soil, the plants will not live for long. In a good position Fescue will keep going for years and the only task will be just cleaning them up a bit in spring. Fescues not generally kept for their flowers, although a few species do have nice flowers. Their main attraction is because of their foliage: blue to green and some with some added red. Fescue looks good in a modern garden with white or orange gravel. Several plants in a large trough also looks good. Watering is hardly necessary. Because of the relaxing colour, Fescue combines well with Sun Rose (Helianthemum), Carnation (Dianthus), Bloody Cranesbill (Geranium sanguineum), Shrubby Gromwell (Lithodora) or Stonecrop (Sedum).

As foliage plant, Foamy Bells combines nicely with ferns, Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa), Bugle (Ajuga), Hosta (Hosta), Dead Nettle (Lamium) and Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera). Also suitable as a pot plant where its leaves will hang nice over the edge of the pot. Foamy Bells wants a not too dry, humus rich, well-draining soil. Add some compost every spring. The foliage of Foamy Bells can change its colour quite strongly through the seasons.

General information about Hosta (Hosta):
Hosta (Hosta) is a genus of plants mainly planted because of their varied foliage. The flowers of Hosta are white or mauve. The varieties with white flowers often have a nice scent. Most Hosta's do well in (half)shade although some will tolerate more sun as long as the soil is moist. Hosta's are nice plants which over the years will form a nice clump. Do you have a sitting area in the shade? Why not have a collection of Hosta's in pots. Hosta's combine well with other shade loving foliage plants such as ferns, Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa), Bugle (Ajuga), Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera) and Dead Nettle (Lamium). The only disadvantage of Hosta's is that slugs and snails also love them! They will devour them within no time, especially those with softer leaves. The varieties of Hosta with thick grey leaves are least attractive to them. Spread Eco friendly slug pellets around the plants early in spring.

The genus Dead Nettle (Lamium) is closely related to the genus Yellow Archangel (Lamiastrum). The latter is especially suited as ground cover because of its long runners. The plants of the genus Dead Nettle stay more compact and form a dense mat. This makes them very suited in the front of a (half) shadow border. A bit more sun is ok as long as the soil is moist. The foliage of Dead Nettle also has a nice colouring, shades of silver and yellow. The 'lip flowers' are also nice and colours vary between purple, pink or white. Dead Nettle combines well with Tongue Fern (Asplenium scolopendrium), Bleeding Heart (Dicentra), Barrenwort (Epimedium) and Hosta (Hosta).

Tree Mallow wants a spot in the full sun, in normal soil with enough fertilizer. Give them a hand full of fresh compost every spring. Tree Mallow will not survive a severe winter without extra protection, so cover the base of the plant with a good layer of leaves. In spring, cut Tree Mallow back to about 30 cm above ground level. Good neighbour plants for Tree Mallow are Giant Hyssop (Agastache), purple flowering Aster (Aster), Mullein (Verbascum) and Fountain Grass (Pennisetum).

In April, cut Cotton Lavender halfway back and top the stems again after flowering in order to maintain a nice bushy plant. Cotton Lavender does not like water at all in the winter. Ensure very good drainage is in place. Good planting partners for Cotton Lavender are Lavender (Lavandula), Thyme (Thymus) and Culinary Sage (Salvia officinalis).

General information about Stonecrop (Sedum):
Stonecrop (Sedum) is a genus of plants, varying from creeping rockery plants to large border plants. They have varying flower- and leaf shapes. There is a Stonecrop for every garden. On the whole, Stonecrop like a spot in the sun in quite dry, poor soil. Too much moisture in winter must be avoided. The low varieties of Stonecrop are ideal ground covers. The taller varieties belong in the border where they will attract a lot of insects. Digging these Stonecrop ones up and splitting them every few years will ensure they stay healthy and strong. Some tall varieties of Stonecrop are prone to toppling over. Cut these ones back by half in June. They will then branch and grow less tall, resulting in more but smaller flowers. Stonecrop combines well with Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa), SidHollyhock, Blazing Star (Liatris) and Fountain Grass (Pennisetum). Also Baby's Breath (Gypsophila paniculata) and Bee Blossom (Gaura), with their open growth look good next to Stonecrop.

General information about Indian Grass (Sorghastrum):
Indian Grass (Sorghastrum) is a genus of grasses with beautiful flowers. The yellow stamen are relatively large and hang nicely downwards. Indian Grass originates from the North American prairies. Plant them in the full sun in a dry to normal moist soil. If the soil is too wet or fertile the plants will collapse and also the foliage will not get its normally nice blue/grey colour. Indian Grass is lover by flower arrangers. As neighbour plants for Indian Grass you could use other prairie plants, such as Aster (Aster), Phlox (Phlox), Beebalm (Monarda), Yarrow (Achillea) or Sunflower (Helianthus).

General information about Thyme (Thymus):
Thyme (Thymus) is a genus of creeping perennials with scented leaves. They form dense mats which occasionally could be walked upon. Thyme is available with different types of leaves, scent, flower colour and shape. They are plants which are good for in the rockery, on walls or just 'appeared' in a path. They attract lots of insects. Thyme is ever green and likes a dry and sunny position. You could cut them back slightly in spring, after flowering. This will help to keep them nice and compact. Thyme also looks nice in a pot or trough on the patio or balcony, planted with other herbs, such as Chives (Allium schoenoprasum), Wild Oregano (Origanum vulgare), Rosemary (Rosmarinus), Mint (Mentha), Culinary Sage (Salvia officinalis) and Balm (Melissa). Planted up with these, you have a good supply for in the kitchen.

General information about Mullein (Verbascum):
Mullein (Verbascum) is a genus of plants that deliver a beautiful vertical accent to the garden. Some Mullein are perennial, others behave as bi- or even tri-annual. Very broadly speaking, you can say that the tallest varieties will die after flowering and that the lower varieties will survive for a few years. The short-lived varieties self-seed easily, so you will not be without. There are many new cultivars of Mullein being brought to the market which still have to prove themselves. Mullein of the varieties nigrum and chaixii are usually perennial. Mullein likes a spot in the sun in dry to normal soil which drains well. If you do not want them to self-seed, cut away the flower stems after flowering. This might also lengthen the lifespan of short-lived varieties. Mullein is good in the natural garden but also in the border.
