General information about New Zealand Bur (Acaena):
New Zealand Bur (Acaena) is a genus of evergreen low growing perennials. They develop creeping stems which at fixed intervals have tuffs of feathered shoots. The flowers of New Zealand Bur are a bit non-descript but are followed in the autumn by small copper coloured fruits covered in small hooks. New Zealand Bur is very useful as a ground cover on poor soils. What looks particularly nice, is a large area of New Zealand Bur dotted with the high tuffs of Maiden Grass (Miscanthus).

General information about Yarrow (Achillea):
Yarrows (Achillea) are low to high perennials for a sunny position on normal to poor soil. The foliage is feathery and the plant has a shield of small flower heads. The flowers lend themselves well for drying. It looks best when Yarrow is planted in large groups. Deadhead after flowering to prevent seed forming. This will stimulate new growth and prevent seedlings growing in the centres of the plants. These will often not be the same colour as the mother plants. Good neighbours for Yarrow are for example Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa), Helen's Flower (Helenium), Stonecrop (Sedum) and ornamental grasses.

General information about Bugle (Ajuga):
Bugle (Ajuga) is a carpeting evergreen perennial for in the sun or half shade. If in the sun, Bugle needs enough moisture. Bugle spreads with above ground creeping shoots and forms a nice carpet. If, after several years, you get some 'bold' patches, clear these patches and re-plant with some fresh new shoots. A great display is when you combine Bugle with blue flowers and dark foliage with orange Avens (Geum) and light blue or white Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera). This combination still looks good after flowering with its contrasting foliage.

General information about Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla):
Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla) is a good and trusted ground cover and edge plant. Cut it back strongly after flowering so it doesn't seed but produces fresh new foliage. Because Lady's Mantle has a calm and quite neutral colour, it can be combined with pretty much anything. A beautiful combination is Lady's Mantle and blue Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa) as an under growth for pink roses. The foliage of Lady's Mantle mollis is covered in very fine hairs. Dew and rain drops lie on these like little diamonds.

Chamomile combine well with Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa), Yarrow (Achillea) and Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia).

General information about Mugwort (Artemisia):
Most Mugworts (Artemisia) have grey-green foliage and because of this are often used between plants with vibrant colours to create some rest in a border. All species of Mugwort like a sunny position in a somewhat dry, well graining soil. Make sure the plants do not have wet feet in the winter. Mugwort is a true foliage plant. Apart from the species 'lactiflora' the flowers of Mugwort are of little value.

General information about Elephant's Ears (Bergenia):
Elephant's Ears (Bergenia) is a ground covering, usual evergreen plant whose foliage often takes on nice autumn colours. Elephant's Ears likes a spot in the sun or half shade in normal soil. They are definitely not choosy plants. Once established they are quite drought tolerant. After a few years' gaps might appear in your clumps. Digging them up and splitting the plants will cure this. They love some added compost in spring. Elephant's Ears look best when planted in larger groups and can be used for covering larger areas. Good partners for Elephant's Ears are Cranesbill (Geranium) and ornamental grasses.

General information about Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera):
Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera) are perennials with large rough leaves. The last few years has seen a lot of new variegated forms come to market. Great Forget-me-not flowers with pretty blue or white flowers in spring and prefers a position in half-or full shade in humus rich normal soil. It will tolerate sun as long as the soil is moist enough. The varieties with grey in their foliage withstand more sun than the creamy white ones. Great Forget-me-not is a strong plant and very suitable as a ground cover. The only maintenance needed is removing the dead foliage in spring. At the same time give them a hand full of compost. Good neighbouring plants for Great Forget-me-not are Barren Strawberry (Waldsteinia), Sedge (Carex), Hellebore (Helleborus) and White Wood Aster (Aster divaricatus).

General information about Purple Gromwell (Buglossoides):
Purple Gromwell (Buglossoides) has rough bristly foliage and is a plant for a dry to normal soil. They will tolerate sun as well as shade but prefer a spot in half shade, such as under a tree. Once established and happy they need to be kept under control as they spread freely. Purple Gromwell can be used as a good ground cover though. Plant them in groups as a single plant looks a bit lost. Purple Gromwell planting with Bloody Cranesbill (Geranium sanguineum), Yellow Archangel (Lamiastrum) and Moorgrass (Sesleria) looks good.

Ground Cover Plants

Ground cover plants are indispensable in a low-maintenance garden. The plants form a carpet of leaves and flowers, giving unwanted plants less chance to establish themselves.
Ground cover plants are ideal under shrubs and along paths, where they are a beautiful and peaceful addition to the other plants.

Many ground cover plants are strong, hardy and require little maintenance. Once they have established themselves, they spread naturally and fill in empty, ungrown patches.
Whether you have a sunny garden or one with lots of shade, there is always a suitable ground cover plant to be found! Use the filters to find the right plant for your garden.

Above are all the plants in our assortment that literally fulfil the definition of ’ground cover’; they cover the ground. Under the right conditions, these plants will cover the ground between the plants within 2 to 3 years. The recommended planting distance is listed for each plant.

Within the large group of ground cover plants, it is possible to select species that stand out for their exceptional qualities. These reliable species are widely used and rarely disappoint. You can find these strong and popular ground cover plants by clicking here.
