Most Hollyhock (Alcea) are bi-annual. They are tall, stately plants in beautiful colours. Hollyhock looks best against a fence or wall. There are now some new perennial species available which are less prone to rust on their leaves. Something that will not kill Hollyhock, but doesn't look nice. Usually these affected plants are in too moist a position. There is still some debate over the proper naming of the bi- and perennials. General information about Lemon Verbena (Aloysia):
Lemon Verbena (Aloysia) is a genus of small shrub like plants. The leaves have a strong citrus scent and are good to use in the kitchen, fresh or dried. Also a good thee can be brewed from them. Unfortunately, Lemon Verbena is not fully hardy in our climate. They are best grown in pots against a south facing wall which can be kept somewhere frost free in the winter. Prune the plant back before bringing inside. If light and warm enough, the plants will produce new shoots inside and you will be able to enjoy Lemon Verbena through the winter as well.

Hop (Humulus) is a strong, fast growing climber, which is still also found in the wild. Only the female plants will produce the distinctive 'Hops', used in brewing beer. There are varieties of Hop specially selected for this purpose but others, which are better suited for the garden, grow less vigorous and have nice yellow/green foliage in spring. Most varieties of Hop need a fair bit of space. A woodland area is ideal, when planted in half shade in a humus rich soil. Add some fertiliser every spring. Kitchen Herbs - Herbs

Kitchen herbs, through there taste of scent, enhance many dishes. A lot of herbs can be quite easily be grown in your own garden.

Herbs will grow in many places in the garden. The tall varieties, often with nice flowers, for instance, can get a place in the back of the border. Other large varieties with less outspoken flowers can be grown in the vegetable garden. The smaller, dainty harbs can be grown in pots and placed wherever it suits best. You could even keep some pots on the window sill as long as they are light enough. Of course, the nicest option is to have a dedicated herb corner in the garden where you have all varieties together. Plan such an area in the full sun and as near to the kitchen as possible. This is then ideal to just pop out and pick whatever herb you need at that moment.

Many kitchen herbs are grown for there leaves. It is then best to remove any flowers from these plants. The plant’s energy is then not wasted in producing flowers and seed but all is spent on new leaves. You could always use the cut off flowers as decoration on your dishes.

Many herbs naturally grow in quite poor soil. Most varieties do not want any, or very little, fertilizing. There are one or two exceptions here. If this is the case it will be mentioned in the description of these plants. Most herbs grow well in our climate. Some of the Mediterranean plants will need some extra attention concerning there planting position and hardiness. This information is naturally also mentioned in the descriptions.

As you also do with vegetables, it is a good practice to wash your herbs properly before consumption.
