General information about Thyme (Thymus):
Thyme (Thymus) is a genus of creeping perennials with scented leaves. They form dense mats which occasionally could be walked upon. Thyme is available with different types of leaves, scent, flower colour and shape. They are plants which are good for in the rockery, on walls or just 'appeared' in a path. They attract lots of insects. Thyme is ever green and likes a dry and sunny position. You could cut them back slightly in spring, after flowering. This will help to keep them nice and compact. Thyme also looks nice in a pot or trough on the patio or balcony, planted with other herbs, such as Chives (Allium schoenoprasum), Wild Oregano (Origanum vulgare), Rosemary (Rosmarinus), Mint (Mentha), Culinary Sage (Salvia officinalis) and Balm (Melissa). Planted up with these, you have a good supply for in the kitchen.

Kitchen Herbs - Herbs

Kitchen herbs, through there taste of scent, enhance many dishes. A lot of herbs can be quite easily be grown in your own garden.

Herbs will grow in many places in the garden. The tall varieties, often with nice flowers, for instance, can get a place in the back of the border. Other large varieties with less outspoken flowers can be grown in the vegetable garden. The smaller, dainty harbs can be grown in pots and placed wherever it suits best. You could even keep some pots on the window sill as long as they are light enough.  Of course, the nicest option is to have a dedicated herb corner in the garden where you have all varieties together. Plan such an area in the full sun and as near to the kitchen as possible. This is then ideal to just pop out and pick whatever herb you need at that moment.

Many kitchen herbs are grown for there leaves. It is then best to remove any flowers from these plants. The plant’s energy is then not wasted in producing flowers and seed but all is spent on new leaves. You could always use the cut off flowers as decoration on your dishes.

Many herbs naturally grow in quite poor soil. Most varieties do not want any, or very little, fertilizing. There are one or two exceptions here. If this is the case it will be mentioned in the description of these plants. Most herbs grow well in our climate. Some of the Mediterranean plants will need some extra attention concerning there planting position and hardiness. This information is naturally also mentioned in the descriptions.
