General information about Onion (Allium):
The genus Onion (Allium) includes many vegetables but also plenty of ornamental species. Most Onions like a sunny position in a good, slightly alkaline soil. In the winter the bulbs can rot if they are too wet. If you plant your Onion in the autumn, cover them for the first winter with a layer of leaves. With a lot of the species the leaves will dye back during the flowering period. Remember this when planting and camouflage the gaps with, for instant, ornamental grasses. Some of the smaller species of Onion can spread vigorously. These are good for in a wild garden. Onion flowers attract lots of insects and are also good cut flowers. When the tall species flower on the nursery, they sometimes are too tall to ship out. We could cut them back, but then you loss that years flower. Best to order early or contact us first.

General information about Mallow (Malva):

Mallow likes a spot in the sun in well-draining soil. Most species of Mallow really do not like wet winters. The chances of survival are greatly increased if you cut the plant well back after flowering. Mallow will then put its energy into forming new shoots instead of making seed. If you do allow it to produce seed it will often self-seed. Nice neighbour plants for Mallow are Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa), Peach-Leaved Bellflower (Campanula persicifolia) and pale-yellow Yarrow (Achillea).

The botanical name Melissa is derived from the old Greek word for bee. Both, the foliage and flowers of the plants attract a lot of bees. Balm is a must in every herb garden or insect friendly planting. Balm combines well with Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) and Wild Oregano (Origanum vulgare).

General information about Oregano (Origanum):
Oregano (Origanum) is an herb-like plant for in the full sun in normal to moist, well-draining soil. Oregano we know best for its use in the kitchen, but some species are being grown because of their foliage or flowers. For use in the kitchen, Wild Oregano is best. In the right conditions, Oregano can spread vigorously by means of rhizomes or self-seeding. The species 'rotundifolium' has flowers that look like a hop-bell or shrimp. These species can be a bit less hardy. Use these in the rockery or in a pot on the patio where the bells will hang nicely over the edge of the pot. Oregano attracts lots of insects and butterflies and is perfect for a butterfly garden. Good partners for Oregano are other drought lovers, such as Stonecrop (Sedum), Lamb's Ear (Stachys byzantina), St. John's Wort (Hypericum), Cinquefoil (Potentilla) and Lavender (Lavandula).

General information about Parsley (Petroselinum):
Parsley (Petroselinum) is a small genus of herbs. The plants are usually bi-annual. The first year only the foliage grows, the second year the plant flowers and then dies. In the right location, Parsley will often self-seed. In the past, Parsley was used in medicine and often played a role in folklore and superstition. Now, we only really know Parsley as an unmissable herb in the kitchen. The varieties with smooth leaves are often used in the dishes itself and the frilly leaved ones are usually cut up fine and added as flavour enhancer. Parsley should be in every herb garden. Ensure the plant gets enough moisture and feed.

General information about Masterwort (Peucedanum) (Peucedanum):
Masterwort (Peucedanum) is a genus of umbel forming perennials. They like a normal to moist spot in slight alkaline, fertile soil. Shade is tolerated quite well by Masterwort and this does enhance the flowers. If Masterwort self-seeds too much, cut away the flower stem when they have gone over. This will also help future growth of the plant. It may take a few years for Masterwort to establish properly. They attract a lot of insects and look good in the border or in a natural garden. Good neighbours for Masterwort are Monkshood (Aconitum) and Cranesbill (Geranium).

Rosemary (Rosmarinus) is a genus of winter green (half) shrubs from the Mediterranean. Put Rosemary in the full sun in well-draining soil which contains some lime. Ensure good drainage, otherwise Rosemary will not survive the winter. Not all species are fully hardy. Sometimes it is best to plant Rosemary in a pot with good drainage and winter the plant in a dry spot, protected against hard frost and bright winter-sun. By cutting parts of Rosemary regularly for use in the kitchen, you keep the plant nice and bushy. Good neighbour plants for Rosemary are Thyme (Thymus), Lavender (Lavandula) and Oregano (Origanum).

General information about Burnet (Sanguisorba):
Burnet (Sanguisorba) is a genus of well hardy perennials. They all have finely toothed leaves and flowers that can be either upright or hanging. Burnet naturally grows in moist soil but in the garden they will also do all right in normal soil. Burnet is an easy plant that prefers a spot in the sun or half shade. The plant looks good in a natural planting, together with ornamental grasses. Because of its open way of flowering, Burnet also sits well in a border, combined with say, Monkshood (Aconitum), Siberian Iris (Iris sibirica), Leopard Plant (Ligularia) or Garden Speedwell (Veronica longifolia).

General information about Dandelion (Taraxacum):
We all know Dandelion (Taraxacum), but in addition to the yellow variety, there are also varieties with white or pink flowers, often with a beautiful yellow heart. All Dandelion varieties develop a round bulb with seed fluff after flowering. If you want to prevent Dandelion from spreading, remove the spent flowers from the plant in time. This also ensures that Dandelion blooms over a longer period. Dandelion leaf can be used well in the kitchen. The taste is best before the plant flowers. The flowers of Dandelion can be used as an edible garnish in salads. Dandelion is not picky about location. Provide adequate nutrition and avoid a location on dry soil or deep shade.

Kitchen Herbs - Herbs

Kitchen herbs, through there taste of scent, enhance many dishes. A lot of herbs can be quite easily be grown in your own garden.

Herbs will grow in many places in the garden. The tall varieties, often with nice flowers, for instance, can get a place in the back of the border. Other large varieties with less outspoken flowers can be grown in the vegetable garden. The smaller, dainty harbs can be grown in pots and placed wherever it suits best. You could even keep some pots on the window sill as long as they are light enough.  Of course, the nicest option is to have a dedicated herb corner in the garden where you have all varieties together. Plan such an area in the full sun and as near to the kitchen as possible. This is then ideal to just pop out and pick whatever herb you need at that moment.

Many kitchen herbs are grown for there leaves. It is then best to remove any flowers from these plants. The plant’s energy is then not wasted in producing flowers and seed but all is spent on new leaves. You could always use the cut off flowers as decoration on your dishes.

Many herbs naturally grow in quite poor soil. Most varieties do not want any, or very little, fertilizing. There are one or two exceptions here. If this is the case it will be mentioned in the description of these plants. Most herbs grow well in our climate. Some of the Mediterranean plants will need some extra attention concerning there planting position and hardiness. This information is naturally also mentioned in the descriptions.

As you also do with vegetables, it is a good practice to wash your herbs properly before consumption.
