Hierochloe

Hierochloe - Sweetgrass

Hierochloe is a grass that can be found here and there in the wild. The plant forms rhizomes from which new plants will grow. Hierochloe has a strong caramel like scent and because of this it used to be spread around the entrances to churches. Today, Hierochloe is still used in Russia and Poland to add taste to some Vodka's. Indians in North America used the plant as mosquito repellent. When dried and woven together Hierochloe can be used as a very sweet-smelling incense. Hierochloe likes a sunny to part shady spot in normal to moist soil. Because of its spreading habit, Hierochloe is best planted in a meadow or install a root barrier.
