Hogweed  (Heracleum)

Hogweed is a genus of imposing and striking plants known for their sturdy stems and umbellate flowers. Some species can cause unpleasant skin irritation, but this is not usually a problem with the species suitable for the garden. If you are sensitive, always exercise caution with all species of Hogweed. Hogweed thrives best in a sunny to lightly shaded spot with well-drained, moist soil. Hogweed blooms with large umbels in summer. The flowers are attractive to bees and other insects and have a natural look. Hogweed is usually biennial and dies after flowering. Fortunately, the plant often self-seeds.
