Horsetail

Horsetail  (Equisetum)

Horsetail (Equisetum) is an ancient genus, closely related to ferns although they look completely different. Some species of Horsetail can be very invasive. If in doubt, it is best to plant into a pot and then bury the pot in the garden. Usually Horsetail likes sunshine and plenty of moisture. They will grow in boggy areas or in mini-ponds on the terrace. Because of its unusual shape, Horsetail adds interest to the garden. They look good next to plants with contrasting round or oval leaves. Try the smaller Horsetails with Bugle (Ajuga), Mint (Mentha) or Japanese Primrose (Primula japonica) and the large Horsetails with Leopard Plant (Ligularia) and Mountain Fleece (Persicaria amplexicaulis).
