Hyssop

Hyssop  (Hyssopus)

Hyssop (Hyssopus) is a genus related to the Mint (Mentha) family. They are real sun lovers and very hardy. They need a well-draining soil. Hyssop is well known as kitchen herb. They are not often enough used in borders. A shame, as they are strong, rich flowering plants. Why not try Hyssop as a substitute to Lavender (Lavandula)? To maintain nice compact plants, cut them back to half their size after flowering. Hyssop is also good in the natural garden where it will attract lots of insects. Good neighbouring plants for Hyssop are Coneflower (Echinacea), Bee Blossom (Gaura) and St. John's Wort (Hypericum).
