General information about Balsam (Impatiens):
Balsam (Impatiens) is a large genus of perennials, shrubs and annuals. The genus includes hardy and non-hardy species. The species 'omeiana' is reasonably hardy and with a bit of protection it should get through the winter. Balsam likes a spot in the shaded garden in normal to moist soil. To get nice bushy plants you need to top the Balsam a couple of times in the spring. Balsam looks good planted next to Toad Lily (Tricyrtis), Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa), Fringecups (Tellima) and ferns.
