Japanese Blood Grass

Japanese Blood Grass  (Imperata)

Japanese Blood Grass (Imperata) is a genus of grasses which originate from Japan. Only the species 'cylindrica' and his cultivars are hardly enough to use in the garden. It is still advisable to give your new plants a covering of leaves as extra protection in the first winter. Japanese Blood Grass wants a normal soil and a spot in the sun. The foliage of Japanese Blood Grass colours redder and redder as the season progresses. This looks great when back lit by sunshine. Keep this in mind when planting. Japanese Blood Grass will produce short runners and slowly spread and over time form nice groups. For a nice contrast try planting Japanese Blood Grass next to Blue Fescue (Festuca glauca).
