General information about Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia):
Red Hot Pokers (Kniphofia) are stately perennials of which some are ever green. Red Hot Poker flowers with pokers of numerous small tube-like flowers in shades of yellow, orange and red. There are also some new white and two-tone cultivars. If you remover the pokers when they have finished flowering, the plant will through up some more. Red Hot Poker needs a sunny spot in good soil. They hate wet feet in the winter so ensure decent drainage. Although Red Hot Poker is hardy, it is still good to give them some protection from hard frost. This is especially important with new, young plants. Good plant partners for Red Hot Pokers are Fountain Grass (Pennisetum), Catmint (Nepeta) and Coneflower (Rudbeckia).
