Lathyrus - Vetchling

Lathyrus is mainly known as an annual climber but there are also perennial Lathyrus climbers and non-climbers. The species 'latifolius' is a climber and likes a spot in the sun in fertile soil. Use some sticks, shrub or robust perennial, such as Helianthus, as support for Lathyrus to attach to. The species Lathyrus vernus forms a clump and likes to be in half shade, say next to Brunnera and Helleborus. Lathyrus does not like wet feet in the winter. Add some fresh compost around the plant annually.
