Lilyturf (Liriope) has grass like evergreen leaves and the flowers resemble spring flowering Grape Hyacinth, but these flowers in autumn. Lilyturf will grow just about anywhere, but if in the shade it will not produce as many flowers. Lilyturf prefers a slight acidic, humus rich soil. As it is evergreen, the foliage can get some frost damage, which can be cut away in spring. Some species can form a mat, such as Liriope spicata and Liriope muscari 'Big Blue'. The first of these flowers less nicely but can be used to cover large areas in difficult places. Of the clump forming species of Lilyturf, the cultivars 'Moneymaker' and 'Ingwersen' are the strongest and most reliable flowering ones.
