Manchu Tubergourd

Manchu Tubergourd  (Thladiantha)

Manchu Tubergourd (Thladiantha) is a genus of climbers from the cucumber family, mainly from Russia and China. After flowering, green fruits are formed which will turn to red when ripe. These fruits are not edible but they are very decorative. With Manchu Tubergourd the male and female flowers are on separate plants. If you want fruits, you will have to plant several plants together. Underground, Manchu Tubergourd makes small tubers which are edible. They like a warm spot but avoid the midday sun. Also ensure enough moisture. In autumn, Manchu Tubergourd will die back above ground. In winter, cover the tubers with a good layer of leaves. To be absolutely safe, you could always dig up the tubers and re-plant in spring. Manchu Tubergourd will also grow well in a large pot which you can then simply winter frost free.
