Half shade will do but you will not get quite as many flowers. The last few years has seen a lot of new cultivars of Coneflower come to the market, some of which are unfortunately not proving to be fully hardy. Please do not let this stop you enjoying these Coneflowers. Ensure that your young plants do not have too much competition from neighbouring plants as they need space to fully develop. Coneflower is a good plant for in the border, but also a must in the prairie garden. They combine well with lots of plants. General information about Hellebore (Helleborus):
Hellebore (Helleborus) is a group of evergreen or deciduous perennials which flower late in winter or early spring. If the foliage has become ugly in the winter just cut it away as soon as the plant starts flowering. This will also show off the flowers much better. Hellebore wants a spot in the half shade in normal, well-draining, humus rich soil. A hand full of grit every year is appreciated if the soil is not alkaline. Most varieties of Hellebore are grown from seed and sometimes the colours might not come true. If Hellebore self-seeds in the garden you could end up with a whole range of variants. Combine Hellebore with other spring flowering plants such as Lungwort (Pulmonaria), Primrose (Primula), Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa) and Onion (Allium). Also winter-green Sedge (Carex) and early sprouting ferns are a good mix. All varieties of Hellebore are poisonous.

Colour               : Blue-violet
Flowering time       : July - September
Full grown height    : ± 90 cm
Light requirement    : Sun, Partial shade
Moisture requirement : Normal
Winter hardiness     : Till -35°C  (USDA Zone 4)
Spacing              : ± 40 cm (± 6 per m²)
Details              : Insect friendly, At the nursery, all Phloxes are close together and have little ventilation. Several types of Phlox therefore get mildew in late summer and autumn. Because we use as few pesticides as possible, severely affected plants are often pruned back considerably. That seems dramatic, but it is not harmful to the plants. You can plant infected or pruned phloxes in the garden as usual. Because they are further apart, the chance of mildew in subsequent years is much smaller.

Pot size             : Square 9 cm, volume 0,5 Liter
Delivery time        : 4 - 9 working days
Special notes        : -

General information about Phlox (Phlox):
Phlox (Phlox) is a genus of perennials of which many varieties are excellent for in the border. Over the years many cultivars have been bred in a wide range of colours. Phlox likes a place in the sun or half shade in a fertile soil that should not dry out during flowering. They all appreciate some extra feed in spring. Nearly all Phloxs have a scent, but Blue Phlox (Phlox divaricate) is nicest. The tall varieties are good in the border. These Border Phloxs will die back over winter. Good partners are Day Lily (Hemerocallis), Helen's Flower (Helenium), Beebalm (Monarda), Fountain Grass (Pennisetum) and Culver's Root (Veronicastrum). Some varieties of Border Phlox are susceptible to mildew. Ensure there is plenty of space and air around the plants. The low varieties (Creeping Phlox) are usually winter green and perfect for in the rockery or as ground cover. Try combining with Aubrietia (Aubrieta) or Serbian Bellflower (Campanula poscharskyana). Also the Creeping Phloxs (Phlox) are good in a planted pot where they hang nicely over the sides.

General information about Culver's Root (Veronicastrum):
Culver's Root (Veronicastrum) is a group of tall stately plants which give the border a backbone, even in winter. Culver's Root is an easy plant which will last for years without much attention. It can take a couple of years for them to mature. They like a normal to slight moist soil. Dig some compost in when planting and then give them another hand full every spring. Full sunshine will enhance the flowering but a few hours less will not harm. You can always top a number of the flower stems in early summer and thereby spread the flowering period even longer. Culver's Root looks good alongside water but also in the border. Good neighbours are Switchgrass (Panicum), Meadowsweet (Filipendula), tall Phlox (Phlox) and Helen's Flower (Helenium). Culver's Root attracts lots of insects. In a few varieties you may see that different pinnacle fuse together and form one flat one.

General information about Pansy (Viola):
Pansy (Viola) has been grown for centuries for its pretty flowers, which even scent lovely in a few species. There are species of Pansy which only last for one season, think the large headed winter pansies, which are sold in masses every autumn. There are also other species of Pansy which with some care will last for years, such as Horned Violet (Viola cornuta) and Sweet Violet (Viola odorata). The flowers of these species are smaller than the afore mentioned winter pansies, but therefore more in balance with the green of the plant and also better resistant against poor weather. Cut Pansy back a bit if they get a bit straggly and spoil them with some fertilizer. Taking out the seed pods will prolong the flowering season. The plant will also remain stronger. Pretty much all Pansy do well in half shade in normal soil.

There are also some new white and two-tone cultivars. If you remover the pokers when they have finished flowering, the plant will through up some more. Red Hot Poker needs a sunny spot in good soil. They hate wet feet in the winter so ensure decent drainage. Although Red Hot Poker is hardy, it is still good to give them some protection from hard frost. This is especially important with new, young plants. Good plant partners for Red Hot Pokers are Fountain Grass (Pennisetum), Catmint (Nepeta) and Coneflower (Rudbeckia).

General information about Wallflower (Erysimum):
Wallflower (Erysimum) is a perennial for in a dry and sheltered spot, in the full sun and light soil. Wallflower is not fully hardy with us and often will die in winter because of too much water. Therefore, plant in well-draining soil and cover the plants with a layer of leaves in winter. Even though Wallflower will not live for many years it is still a grateful plant. After flowering, cut Wallflower back by one-third to keep a compact shape. The plant will quickly produce a second flush of flowers. Wallflower also does well in pots and troughs. An advantage with this is that they are easier over wintered frost free and dry. There are many different colours available. A nice contrast is to plant grey leaved Mugwort (Artemisia) next to Wallflower.

General information about Tickseed (Coreopsis):
Tickseed (Coreopsis) is a genus of beautiful flowering plants for a not too fertile, well-draining soil in full sun. Tickseed is a must in a colourful flower border but also good to use in planters combined with annuals. There are lots of new varieties being introduced right now of which hardiness and longevity are not known yet. Tickseed from the groups 'lanceolata' and 'grandiflora' are short lived. You can prolong their life by cutting back the plants in late summer down to 5-10 cm above soil level. A shame if they still have flowers, but now they will put their energy into producing new shoots for spring. The most reliable Tickseed are those from the group 'verticillata'. Do not let the above put you off using Tickseed in the garden. They are not expensive and the shorter living varieties will reward you with an abundance of flowers. Tickseed looks good planted next to blue Giant Hyssop (Agastache) and not too tall Fountain Grass (Pennisetum).

Cutting Aubrietia back after flowering stimulates mat- or mound forming and healthy re-growth. If too wet in winter, you may lose your plants. Ensuring good drainage will eliminate this. Use Aubrietia in combination with Dwarf Iris (Iris pumila), Creeping Phlox (Phlox) or Sun Rose (Helianthemum).

General information about Onion (Allium):
The genus Onion (Allium) includes many vegetables but also plenty of ornamental species. Most Onions like a sunny position in a good, slightly alkaline soil. In the winter the bulbs can rot if they are too wet. If you plant your Onion in the autumn, cover them for the first winter with a layer of leaves. With a lot of the species the leaves will dye back during the flowering period. Remember this when planting and camouflage the gaps with, for instant, ornamental grasses. Some of the smaller species of Onion can spread vigorously. These are good for in a wild garden. Onion flowers attract lots of insects and are also good cut flowers. When the tall species flower on the nursery, they sometimes are too tall to ship out. We could cut them back, but then you loss that years flower. Best to order early or contact us first.

There are other species which flowering wise, do not do under to the tall ones, and also attract plenty insects. Not all species of Vervain are fully hardy with us. In any case you should ensure good drainage and a covering of leaves in winter. Also cutting the plant back after flowering will prolong its life. Leave one or two stems so that Vervain can self-seed if you so wish. Vervain wants a spot in the full sun, in normal soil. American Vervain (Verbena hastata) roots near the surface and nead moisture retaining soil (compost). The Tall Vervains (Verbena bonariensis) are usefull to give freshly planted borders some body. Also the plant will self-seed, which is good because once you have had these plants you will never want to be without anymore. The lower species of Vervain are good in the border or rockery and combine well with ornamental grasses, Bee Blossom (Gaura), Tickseed (Coreopsis) and Day Lily (Hemerocallis).

They also look good in a pot in the modern garden with gravel. It may take a few years before Adam's Needle will flower. Once established, most Adam's Needle will survive our winters. We would cover them with a fleece for the first few years in frosty weather. Adam's Needle wants a place in the full sun in normal to reasonably dry soil, ideally with some lime. Ensure good drainage. If you wish to plant around your Adam's Needle, consider Lamb's Ear (Stachys byzantina), New Zealand Bur (Acaena) or Mouse Ear (Cerastium).

General information about Feather Grass (Stipa):
Feather Grass (Stipa) is a genus of clump forming grasses with fine leaves and elegant pinnacles. The plants sway in the slightest breeze. In France they call this plant 'Angle Hair'. Feather Grass likes a warm spot in the sun in normal to dry soil, preferable with some lime. Especially in winter an excess of water need to flow away. A few species of Feather Grass need some extra protection over winter. The hardiness of the plants is shown in the shop. Many species of Feather Grass do well in a modern garden, for example in a bed of gravel. In the garden, the taller species look best solitary and the smaller species look best when planted in groups. Choose neighbour plants which do not grow taller than one third of the Feather Grass, otherwise you lose the nice, loose effect of their flowers.

General information about Beebalm (Monarda):
Beebalm (Monarda) is an upright perennial available in many colours. Beebalm likes a fertile, good soil. If they do not get this, they can start 'wandering' through the border, looking for this. You can prevent this by digging the plants up every few years, split them and add lots of fresh compost to the soil. Beebalm can be susceptible to mildew, especially if they are in too dry soil. Ensure there is plenty of air around the plant so that the foliage can dry off quickly. After flowering you can cut Beebalm bright back, which will encourage new shoots. Because of its architectural properties and unusual flowers, Beebalm should have a place in every border. It is also a good plant for in the prairie garden. Good neighbour plants for Beebalm are Fountain Grass (Pennisetum), Coneflower (Rudbeckia), Day Lily (Hemerocallis), Aster (Aster) and tall Phlox (Phlox).

General information about Catmint (Nepeta):
Catmint (Nepeta) is a genus of herb-like plants, often with grey/green foliage and blue or white flowers. Most species of Catmint like sunshine and a well-draining, dry to normal soil. Too fertile soil will give weak, hanging plants. Catmint flowers for a long time and most species are good nectar suppliers to bees. Some species are also attracted to cats, mainly from the 'faassenii' group. You could always plant them next to some plants that cats dislike, such as Rue (Ruta), Rock Cranesbill (Geranium macrorrhizum) and Golden Buttons (Tanacetum vulgare). Cut Catmint back to half its height after its first flowering to prevent self-seeding and to stimulate a second flowering. Catmint can be used in many places in the garden, as an edging to paths, in borders and in a natural planting. Catmints are calm to the eye and will combine with many other plants. Nice is combined with soft yellow Chamomile (Anthemis) and Feather Grass (Stipa).

General information about Hosta (Hosta):
Hosta (Hosta) is a genus of plants mainly planted because of their varied foliage. The flowers of Hosta are white or mauve. The varieties with white flowers often have a nice scent. Most Hosta's do well in (half)shade although some will tolerate more sun as long as the soil is moist. Hosta's are nice plants which over the years will form a nice clump. Do you have a sitting area in the shade? Why not have a collection of Hosta's in pots. Hosta's combine well with other shade loving foliage plants such as ferns, Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa), Bugle (Ajuga), Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera) and Dead Nettle (Lamium). The only disadvantage of Hosta's is that slugs and snails also love them! They will devour them within no time, especially those with softer leaves. The varieties of Hosta with thick grey leaves are least attractive to them. Spread Eco friendly slug pellets around the plants early in spring.

Montbretia is also a good cut flower. Plant in the sun in a well-draining, normal soil. If too wet, especially in winter, the corms of Montbretia will rot away. Plant the corms quite deep, the bottom of them at 15-20 cm. This will help the hardiness as when planted too shallow they can frost. Also covering with a layer of leaves in winter will safeguard them. If you have a wet garden it is advisable to dig the corms of Montbretia up in late autumn and re-plant in spring.

Pampas Grass (Cortaderia) is a clump forming, usually tall ornamental grass for in an open spot in the full sun in good soil. Pampas Grass has beautiful tall flower plumes and grey-green foliage with rough sharp edges. The first few years after planting it is advised to cover Pampas Grass with straw in winter, as it is not yet fully hardy. Also too much water in winter can be deadly. A good practice is to tie all the foliage up into a sheaf before the winter. This will divert excess water away from the heart of the plant and also protect against frost. Do not cut back the leaves till spring time. To give Pampas Grass a good start, it is recommended to plant Pampas Grass before the summer. Pampas Grass is beautiful as a specimen or in a grass-garden, surrounded by less tall ornamental grasses.

The panicles of Sedge are sometimes not very interesting, which cannot be said for its foliage. A characteristic of Sedge is the triangular shaped foliage. Most species require a normal to moist soil in the sun. There are some species of Sedge that, once established, will do well in dry shade.

Aster (Aster) forms a large genus of perennials. One for everybody, in all colours and sizes. Most Asters want full sun in a reasonably fertile, well-draining, moist soil. After flowering, cut back to maintain a nice clump shape. Every 3 years it is good to dig Aster up and split it up. The tall varieties for in the border combine nicely with other plants such as Burnet (Sanguisorba), Meadowsweet (Filipendula), Fountain Grass (Pennisetum), Lampwick Plant (Phlomis) and Anemone (Anemone).

General information about Masterwort (Astrantia) (Astrantia):
Masterwort (Astrantia) are beautiful plants for in a rich soil in half-shade. More sun is ok as long as the soil is moist. Masterwort does not grow quick, but steadily, over the years they will form a nice clump. There are white, pink and red varieties. They are good cut flowers. If happy, Masterwort can self-seed, but often their offspring are less colourful. To prevent self-seeding, cut away the flower stems after flowering. Quite often this will also stimulate a second flowering. Masterwort looks best planted in groups of minimal 5 plants in the border. Masterwort looks great next to Coral Bells (Heuchera).

Thrift enjoys a sunny open position in dry to normal soil. Thrifts natural habitat is along the coast and therefore the plant is resilient to salt and also salt-spreading along roads. An ideal plant for gardeners along the coast. Good companion plants for Thrift are Thyme (Thymus), Fleabane (Erigeron), Catmint (Nepeta) and Cotton Lavender (Santolina). Removing dead flowers will lengthen the flowering period. Apart from the species 'pseudarmeria', all Thrifts are hardy.

General information about Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla):
Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla) is a good and trusted ground cover and edge plant. Cut it back strongly after flowering so it doesn't seed but produces fresh new foliage. Because Lady's Mantle has a calm and quite neutral colour, it can be combined with pretty much anything. A beautiful combination is Lady's Mantle and blue Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa) as an under growth for pink roses. The foliage of Lady's Mantle mollis is covered in very fine hairs. Dew and rain drops lie on these like little diamonds.

Burnet (Sanguisorba) is a genus of well hardy perennials. They all have finely toothed leaves and flowers that can be either upright or hanging. Burnet naturally grows in moist soil but in the garden they will also do all right in normal soil. Burnet is an easy plant that prefers a spot in the sun or half shade. The plant looks good in a natural planting, together with ornamental grasses. Because of its open way of flowering, Burnet also sits well in a border, combined with say, Monkshood (Aconitum), Siberian Iris (Iris sibirica), Leopard Plant (Ligularia) or Garden Speedwell (Veronica longifolia).

General information about Yarrow (Achillea):
Yarrows (Achillea) are low to high perennials for a sunny position on normal to poor soil. The foliage is feathery and the plant has a shield of small flower heads. The flowers lend themselves well for drying. It looks best when Yarrow is planted in large groups. Deadhead after flowering to prevent seed forming. This will stimulate new growth and prevent seedlings growing in the centres of the plants. These will often not be the same colour as the mother plants. Good neighbours for Yarrow are for example Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa), Helen's Flower (Helenium), Stonecrop (Sedum) and ornamental grasses.

General information about Goldenrod (Solidago):
Goldenrod (Solidago) is a genus of upright strong perennials. For a long time Goldenrod was neglected because of its invasive behaviour and yellow colour. Through breeding, we now have varieties which are much better suited to the garden. They are not invasive anymore and the colour has mellowed. Goldenrod is an easy plant for in normal soil and sunshine. Half shade will also do. Goldenrod has a natural look, attracts lots of insects and is therefore good in a natural setting. Also in a colourful border Goldenrod has its place together with Giant Hyssop (Agastache), Aster (Aster), Bellflower (Campanula), Helen's Flower (Helenium) and Globe Thistle (Echinops).
