Most Hosta's do well in (half)shade although some will tolerate more sun as long as the soil is moist. Hosta's are nice plants which over the years will form a nice clump. Do you have a sitting area in the shade? Why not have a collection of Hosta's in pots. Hosta's combine well with other shade loving foliage plants such as ferns, Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa), Bugle (Ajuga), Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera) and Dead Nettle (Lamium). The only disadvantage of Hosta's is that slugs and snails also love them! They will devour them within no time, especially those with softer leaves. The varieties of Hosta with thick grey leaves are least attractive to them. Spread Eco friendly slug pellets around the plants early in spring.

As under planting in the pot you could use Cushion Bolax (Azorella) or Brassbuttons (Leptinella) as a nice contrast to the leaf shape. When bruising the leaves of Society Garlic, you smell the typical garlic scent. All parts of the plant are edible and are good in salads of cream cheese. Society Garlic is not yet well known which is a shame and most definitely worth a try.

Leave one or two stems so that Vervain can self-seed if you so wish. Vervain wants a spot in the full sun, in normal soil. American Vervain (Verbena hastata) roots near the surface and nead moisture retaining soil (compost). The Tall Vervains (Verbena bonariensis) are usefull to give freshly planted borders some body. Also the plant will self-seed, which is good because once you have had these plants you will never want to be without anymore. The lower species of Vervain are good in the border or rockery and combine well with ornamental grasses, Bee Blossom (Gaura), Tickseed (Coreopsis) and Day Lily (Hemerocallis).

Bluestem likes a spot in the sun in a fertile, well-draining soil which is dry to normally moist. Why not plant Coneflower (Rudbeckia), a nice warm coloured Yarrow (Achillea), Helen's Flower (Helenium) or Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia) next to it. Bluestem will also do well in a large pot on the patio.

General information about Stonecrop (Sedum):
Stonecrop (Sedum) is a genus of plants, varying from creeping rockery plants to large border plants. They have varying flower- and leaf shapes. There is a Stonecrop for every garden. On the whole, Stonecrop like a spot in the sun in quite dry, poor soil. Too much moisture in winter must be avoided. The low varieties of Stonecrop are ideal ground covers. The taller varieties belong in the border where they will attract a lot of insects. Digging these Stonecrop ones up and splitting them every few years will ensure they stay healthy and strong. Some tall varieties of Stonecrop are prone to toppling over. Cut these ones back by half in June. They will then branch and grow less tall, resulting in more but smaller flowers. Stonecrop combines well with Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa), SidHollyhock, Blazing Star (Liatris) and Fountain Grass (Pennisetum). Also Baby's Breath (Gypsophila paniculata) and Bee Blossom (Gaura), with their open growth look good next to Stonecrop.

The plant looks good in a natural planting, together with ornamental grasses. Because of its open way of flowering, Burnet also sits well in a border, combined with say, Monkshood (Aconitum), Siberian Iris (Iris sibirica), Leopard Plant (Ligularia) or Garden Speedwell (Veronica longifolia).

General information about Rodgers Flower (Rodgersia):
Rodgers Flower (Rodgersia) is straight away recognizable by its large palmate leaves. It is a very hardy, slow growing perennial. It takes a few years to mature but then you get a reliable eye-catching plant. The foliage of some varieties has dark colours especially in spring. The flowers of Rodgers Flower can vary between white to pinky/red. After flowering, the stems are still attractive for a long time. Rodgers Flower wants a spot in the (half) shade in fertile, normal soil which may be moist. A spot in the sun is ok as long as the plant gets enough moisture. They appreciate a gift of fresh compost in spring. Rodgers Flower is a late starter in spring and it is good to plant spring flowering bulbs in-between them, such as Snowdrop (Galanthus) and Squill (Scilla). Good strong neighbour plants for Rodgers Flower are Indian Rhubarb (Darmera), Astilbe (Astilbe), Mountain Fleece (Persicaria amplexicaulis) and Royal Fern (Osmunda).

Common name          : Border Phlox, Garden Phlox, Tall Phlox, Perennial Phlox

Colour               : White, soft yellow-green eye
Flowering time       : June - July

Spacing              : ± 40 cm (± 6 per m²)
Details              : Insect friendly, At the nursery, all Phloxes are close together and have little ventilation. Several types of Phlox therefore get mildew in late summer and autumn. Because we use as few pesticides as possible, severely affected plants are often pruned back considerably. That seems dramatic, but it is not harmful to the plants. You can plant infected or pruned phloxes in the garden as usual. Because they are further apart, the chance of mildew in subsequent years is much smaller.

General information about Phlox (Phlox):
Phlox (Phlox) is a genus of perennials of which many varieties are excellent for in the border. Over the years many cultivars have been bred in a wide range of colours. Phlox likes a place in the sun or half shade in a fertile soil that should not dry out during flowering. They all appreciate some extra feed in spring. Nearly all Phloxs have a scent, but Blue Phlox (Phlox divaricate) is nicest. The tall varieties are good in the border. These Border Phloxs will die back over winter. Good partners are Day Lily (Hemerocallis), Helen's Flower (Helenium), Beebalm (Monarda), Fountain Grass (Pennisetum) and Culver's Root (Veronicastrum). Some varieties of Border Phlox are susceptible to mildew. Ensure there is plenty of space and air around the plants. The low varieties (Creeping Phlox) are usually winter green and perfect for in the rockery or as ground cover. Try combining with Aubrietia (Aubrieta) or Serbian Bellflower (Campanula poscharskyana). Also the Creeping Phloxs (Phlox) are good in a planted pot where they hang nicely over the sides.

Botanical name       : Phlox 'Koningin Paola'
Common name          : Border Phlox, Garden Phlox, Tall Phlox, Perennial Phlox

Colour               : Pink-violet
Flowering time       : June - August
Full grown height    : ± 60 cm
Light requirement    : Sun, Partial shade
Moisture requirement : Normal
Winter hardiness     : Till -29°C  (USDA Zone 5)
Spacing              : ± 40 cm (± 6 per m²)

Because we use as few pesticides as possible, severely affected plants are often pruned back considerably. That seems dramatic, but it is not harmful to the plants. You can plant infected or pruned phloxes in the garden as usual. Because they are further apart, the chance of mildew in subsequent years is much smaller.

General information about Fountain Grass (Pennisetum):
Fountain Grass (Pennisetum) is a genus of ornamental grasses that was one of the first to be introduced into the garden. The bristly plumes of Fountain Grass are attractive, both in the garden but also when used in flower arranging. Fountain Grass prefers a spot in the sun and in fertile well-draining soil. If in a less sunny spot, the plant will grow, but flower less. Within the genus Fountain Grass we have miniatures and giants, one for every garden! The grasses of the species 'alopecuroides' are the hardiest ones. Why not plant some groups of 3 plants in the border, surrounded by plants that only grow to half the grass's height. Good neighbour plants for Fountain Grass are Stonecrop (Sedum), Aster (Aster), Obedient Plant (Physostegia), Cranesbill (Geranium) and Bee Blossom (Gaura). Also, in the modern garden, Fountain Grass is brilliant when surrounded by New Zealand Bur (Acaena) or gravel. If after time the plant starts flowering less, it is possibly time to dig the Fountain Grass up and split the clump up.

General information about Masterwort (Peucedanum) (Peucedanum):
Masterwort (Peucedanum) is a genus of umbel forming perennials. They like a normal to moist spot in slight alkaline, fertile soil. Shade is tolerated quite well by Masterwort and this does enhance the flowers. If Masterwort self-seeds too much, cut away the flower stem when they have gone over. This will also help future growth of the plant. It may take a few years for Masterwort to establish properly. They attract a lot of insects and look good in the border or in a natural garden. Good neighbours for Masterwort are Monkshood (Aconitum) and Cranesbill (Geranium).

General information about Catmint (Nepeta):
Catmint (Nepeta) is a genus of herb-like plants, often with grey/green foliage and blue or white flowers. Most species of Catmint like sunshine and a well-draining, dry to normal soil. Too fertile soil will give weak, hanging plants. Catmint flowers for a long time and most species are good nectar suppliers to bees. Some species are also attracted to cats, mainly from the 'faassenii' group. You could always plant them next to some plants that cats dislike, such as Rue (Ruta), Rock Cranesbill (Geranium macrorrhizum) and Golden Buttons (Tanacetum vulgare). Cut Catmint back to half its height after its first flowering to prevent self-seeding and to stimulate a second flowering. Catmint can be used in many places in the garden, as an edging to paths, in borders and in a natural planting. Catmints are calm to the eye and will combine with many other plants. Nice is combined with soft yellow Chamomile (Anthemis) and Feather Grass (Stipa).

General information about Maiden Grass (Miscanthus):
Maiden Grass (Miscanthus) is one of the most well-known ornamental grasses. They are clump forming, reasonably fast-growing plants which often also display nice autumn colours. The height of Maiden Grass varies from knee-height to over 2 meters. Especially nice are the varieties with striped or mottled leaves. Maiden Grass can be used as a solitary plant or in groups. Maiden Grass prefers a spot in the sun in normal soil, although some shade does not harm it either. It flowers in late summer and is quite spectacular. When gone over, the flower stems still give you a nice display over winter. Some varieties of Maiden Grass will only flower after a nice warm summer. Do not cut Maiden Grass back until spring, as soon as the young shoots are visible. Maiden Grass is a very versatile grass that should be in every garden.

General information about Moorgrass (Molinia) (Molinia):
Moorgrass (Molinia) is a clump forming hardy grass with tall upright stems. Many varieties of Moorgrass display nice autumn colours. This grass grows well in the sun or half shade in most soils as long as moist enough and not alkaline. The tall species (Molinia arundinacea) are good as solitary plants. The less tall species (Molinia caerulea) look best planted in a group or in a large pot on the patio. The open form of Moorgrass lends itself well to a natural planting, together with Aster (Aster), Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum) and Yellow Loosestrife (Lysimachia punctata). The height mentioned with the plant is the flowering height. The foliage of Moorgrass is at about one third of the flowering height.

General information about Foamy Bells (Heucherella):
Foamy Bells (Heucherella) is a hybrid between Coral Bells (Heuchera) and Foam Flower (Tiarella). It is a reasonable ground covering foliage plant quite tolerant to shade. There are a variety of foliage colours available and there is always one out there that will look good against its neighbour plant. As foliage plant, Foamy Bells combines nicely with ferns, Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa), Bugle (Ajuga), Hosta (Hosta), Dead Nettle (Lamium) and Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera). Also suitable as a pot plant where its leaves will hang nice over the edge of the pot. Foamy Bells wants a not too dry, humus rich, well-draining soil. Add some compost every spring. The foliage of Foamy Bells can change its colour quite strongly through the seasons.

General information about Hosta (Hosta):
Hosta (Hosta) is a genus of plants mainly planted because of their varied foliage. The flowers of Hosta are white or mauve. The varieties with white flowers often have a nice scent.

Some species can cause unpleasant skin irritation, but this is not usually a problem with the species suitable for the garden. If you are sensitive, always exercise caution with all species of Hogweed. Hogweed thrives best in a sunny to lightly shaded spot with well-drained, moist soil. Hogweed blooms with large umbels in summer. The flowers are attractive to bees and other insects and have a natural look. Hogweed is usually biennial and dies after flowering. Fortunately, the plant often self-seeds.

General information about Hellebore (Helleborus):
Hellebore (Helleborus) is a group of evergreen or deciduous perennials which flower late in winter or early spring. If the foliage has become ugly in the winter just cut it away as soon as the plant starts flowering. This will also show off the flowers much better. Hellebore wants a spot in the half shade in normal, well-draining, humus rich soil. A hand full of grit every year is appreciated if the soil is not alkaline. Most varieties of Hellebore are grown from seed and sometimes the colours might not come true. If Hellebore self-seeds in the garden you could end up with a whole range of variants. Combine Hellebore with other spring flowering plants such as Lungwort (Pulmonaria), Primrose (Primula), Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa) and Onion (Allium). Also winter-green Sedge (Carex) and early sprouting ferns are a good mix. All varieties of Hellebore are poisonous.
