General information about Beardtongue (Penstemon):Beardtongue (Penstemon) is a genus of perennials with unusual flowers. A very large range of cultivars have been grown with a wide range of colours. Unfortunately, a lot of these cultivars are not fully hardy with us, and this is mainly that our winters can be too wet for them. Beardtongue needs a well-draining soil in the full sunshine. The species Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis) tends to be the hardiest with us. Beardtongue flowers for a long period, but it is best to remove any flowering stems in mid-September so that the plant can put its energy into producing new shoots. Try combining Beardtongue with Yarrow (Achillea), Coneflower (Echinacea), Pincushion Flower (Scabiosa) or Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa).Beardtongue - Penstemon strictus
