General information about Shield Fern (Polystichum):
Shield Fern (Polystichum) is a large genus of ferns which includes many good species for in the garden. They can be found just about anywhere in the world and often are ever green as long as they are not exposed to a freezing wind. Shield Fern likes a spot in the (half)shade in a humus rich, moist soil. Although they prefer some lime in the soil they will grow fine in most gardens. Shield Fern forms a nice clump and are not invasive and belong in every woodland or shadow garden. They combines nicely with Hosta (Hosta), Knotted Cranesbill (Geranium nodosum) and Lilyturf (Liriope). Some species of Shield Fern are grown for their unusual shaped leaves. If you only have space for one fern, go for one of the Soft Shield Ferns.
