General information about Alkanet (Anchusa):
Alkanet (Anchusa) is a plant with beautiful bright blue flowers and rough foliage. They are plants for a rich, well-draining soil in a sunny position. It definitely does not like wet feet in the winter. Recommended is cutting Alkanet back strongly after flowering. This will make them stronger and more resistant in the winter. Sometimes you will get a second flush of flowers in late summer. It must be said that Alkanet is not a plant that will live forever, but because of its lovely colour is unmissable in the border. General information about Giant Reed (Arundo):
Giant Reed (Arundo) is a bamboo-like grass. They are large plants with tall stems and large leaves. Giant Reed needs a lot of space and best restrict its spreading rhizomes. They like a well-draining soil which doesn't dry out. For thousands of years Giant Reed has been used to make walking sticks, fishing rods and flutes. Even now, Giant Reed is still used in certain wind-instruments. Give the plant some extra protection during the first couple of winters. After that it will be fine. In spring, cut last year's foliage back. A good companion plant for Giant Reed is Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium). The variegated Giant Reeds will stay somewhat smaller but are also less hardy.

Also it is best to re-plant them somewhere else in the garden. After its first flowering, cut Larkspur well back and add some fertilizer. Often you will be treated to a second flowering in late summer. Larkspur look good planted with Day Lily (Hemerocallis), Coneflower (Echinacea) and Yarrow (Achillea). Unfortunately, slugs and snails are also attracted to Larkspur. Early in spring, spread some biological slug pellets around the plants.

General information about Lupin (Lupinus):
Lupin (Lupinus) produce pea-like flowers on long racemes in a great variety of colours. It is a plant most people will be familiar with. Lupin likes a spot in the sun in slight acidic, well-draining soil. Most varieties of Lupin will do very well for a few years and then start to struggle. By cutting away the flowering stems after flowering, the plant will not waste energy producing seed. This will help the plant and you might also get a second flowering. Lupin is a must in the cottage and wild garden. Give Lupin some compost in spring. Nice combinations can be made with Yarrow (Achillea), Poppy (Papaver), Ox-eye Daisy (Leucanthemum) and Tree Mallow (Lavatera).

General information about Rice-paper Plant (Tetrapanax):
Rice-paper Plant (Tetrapanax) is mainly grown for its beautiful leaves and its exotic appearance. They can grow into a small shrub. The soil needs to be normal to moist, but not wet. Above ground, Rice-paper Plant is not fully hardy but will mostly shoot from the bottom again if it does get frosted off. Avoid disturbing the roots because if you do the plant will form new shoots at these points and can spread vigorously. The plant likes some fertilizer in spring. Rice-paper Plant does not flower until it is mature and this can take several years. Rice-paper Plant also looks good in a large pot which can then be brought inside over winter.
