Prairie Mallow

Prairie Mallow  (Sidalcea)

Prairie Mallow (Sidalcea) has beautiful upright recemen of flowers. They are long flowering plants which are suited to a spot in the front of the border or in the prairie garden. The flowers are also good as a cut flower. Prairie Mallow grows best in non-alkaline, well-draining soil in the full sun. Especially in winter the water should drain away freely. After flowering, cut the stems away completely so that the plant does not put any energy into seed production. This will prolong the plant life and may also give a small second flowering. Good partners for Prairie Mallow are Tall Moor Grass (Molinia caerulea), Yarrow (Achillea), Sea Holly (Eryngium) and Giant Hyssop (Agastache).
