New Zealand Bur (Acaena) is a genus of evergreen low growing perennials. They develop creeping stems which at fixed intervals have tuffs of feathered shoots. The flowers of New Zealand Bur are a bit non-descript but are followed in the autumn by small copper coloured fruits covered in small hooks. New Zealand Bur is very useful as a ground cover on poor soils. What looks particularly nice, is a large area of New Zealand Bur dotted with the high tuffs of Maiden Grass (Miscanthus).

Bugle (Ajuga) is a carpeting evergreen perennial for in the sun or half shade. If in the sun, Bugle needs enough moisture. Bugle spreads with above ground creeping shoots and forms a nice carpet. If, after several years, you get some 'bold' patches, clear these patches and re-plant with some fresh new shoots. A great display is when you combine Bugle with blue flowers and dark foliage with orange Avens (Geum) and light blue or white Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera). This combination still looks good after flowering with its contrasting foliage.

General information about Hollyhock (Alcea):
Most Hollyhock (Alcea) are bi-annual. They are tall, stately plants in beautiful colours. Hollyhock looks best against a fence or wall. There are now some new perennial species available which are less prone to rust on their leaves. Something that will not kill Hollyhock, but doesn't look nice. Usually these affected plants are in too moist a position. There is still some debate over the proper naming of the bi- and perennials. In our web shop we have put the perennials under the genus Mallow (Malva).

Special notes        : Alstroemerias are difficult to keep beautiful in the nursery. The plants are close together in boxes, which means there is a risk of fungus. They are therefore kept on the dry side so that the fungus has less chance. Because they are close together, they get too little light and they grow together. The lower leaves then turn yellow or fall off. The stems are also often weak and sometimes fall over. To keep the plants compact, they are pruned back regularly, but this can sometimes be omitted due to the crowds.
Therefore, keep in mind that the Alstroemerias you receive, sometimes look less flourishing. We must therefore reject complaints related to the above. Fortunately, Alstroemerias grow quickly and will recover well. Give the plants a moment and they will reward you with a rich bloom! 

General information about Peruvian Lily (Alstroemeria):
Peruvian Lily (Alstroemeria) is a corm and rhizome forming perennial. The colourful flowers stand on the end of slim stems and often are nicely stripped or speckled. Peruvian Lily is also a good cut flower. They are plants for a well-draining, preferably somewhat acidic soil. The orange and yellow flowering Peruvian Lilies are reasonably hardy, but covering them with mulch or leaves in the winter is recommended. The varieties with a lot of white, pink and red in the flowers or with variegated foliage are less hardy. Good neighbours for Peruvian Lily are for example Coral Bells (Heuchera), Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa) and Tall Moor Grass (Molinia caerulea).
