Sensitive Fern

Sensitive Fern  (Onoclea)

Sensitive Fern (Onoclea) is a hardy fern with a creeping rhizome. If in a moist enough location, it can form large groups. Sensitive Fern likes a sunny to half shaded location in acidic soil. The leaves of Sensitive Fern are one of the first to colour and die back in winter. This explains its name. Early in spring Sensitive Fern re-appears with lovely fresh-looking croziers. It is best to plant Sensitive Fern in the first half of the year. If you plant after this, please make sure you cover them for the first winter with a pack of leaves.
