General information about African Lily (Agapanthus):
The genus African Lily (Agapanthus) originates from South Africa. They are valued for their beautiful flower heads that rise above the foliage in summer. Due to their origin, Agapanthus are not fully hardy in our climate, although hardiness varies greatly between species. An important characteristic here is whether the plants lose their leaves in autumn or keep them. The deciduous species of Agapanthus are generally fairly hardy. With a protective layer of straw or dead leaves, they can remain in the garden during the winter. Ensure good drainage and preferably plant them in the spring so that they can form a strong root system before winter. If this is not possible, cover them extra well during the first winter. The evergreen varieties of Agapanthus can only tolerate light frost and are therefore better kept in pots, which can be stored frost-free during the winter. Each variety in our webshop is noted as either a deciduous or evergreen variety of Agapanthus. Agapanthus have thick, fleshy roots. It is a myth that Agapanthus must be kept in a cramped pot; in fact, they should be given a larger pot in which the plant can develop well. For abundant flowering, Agapanthus needs sufficient nutrition in addition to a sunny spot. Strawberry fertilizer in granule form has a good composition to serve as nutrition for Agapanthus.

General information about Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum):
We all know Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum) as cut flowers, but there are also many varieties available as hardy plants for in the garden. This group you will find in our on-line shop. Chrysanthemums are available in a variety of colours and shapes, singles, doubles or pom-pom. Because they flower late in the season, they are very useful in the border, in a sunny to lightly shaded spot in a well-draining soil. Best plant Chrysanthemum before the summer so that they have plenty of time to establish properly before winter. If you do plant Chrysanthemum in late summer, best to cover the plants with a layer of straw or leaves in winter. Taller varieties of Chrysanthemum can be topped in early summer to produce bushier plants.

General information about Onion (Allium):
The genus Onion (Allium) includes many vegetables but also plenty of ornamental species. Most Onions like a sunny position in a good, slightly alkaline soil. In the winter the bulbs can rot if they are too wet. If you plant your Onion in the autumn, cover them for the first winter with a layer of leaves. With a lot of the species the leaves will dye back during the flowering period. Remember this when planting and camouflage the gaps with, for instant, ornamental grasses. Some of the smaller species of Onion can spread vigorously. These are good for in a wild garden. Onion flowers attract lots of insects and are also good cut flowers. When the tall species flower on the nursery, they sometimes are too tall to ship out. We could cut them back, but then you loss that years flower. Best to order early or contact us first.

The foliage of Marsh Mallow is also hairier and it produces often more than one flowering stem. The root of Marsh Mallow is used in the traditional recipe for marshmallow. General information about Hollyhock (Alcea):
Most Hollyhock (Alcea) are bi-annual. They are tall, stately plants in beautiful colours. Hollyhock looks best against a fence or wall. There are now some new perennial species available which are less prone to rust on their leaves. Something that will not kill Hollyhock, but doesn't look nice. Usually these affected plants are in too moist a position. There is still some debate over the proper naming of the bi- and perennials. In our web shop we have put the perennials under the genus Mallow (Malva).

They are therefore kept on the dry side so that the fungus has less chance. Because they are close together, they get too little light and they grow together. The lower leaves then turn yellow or fall off. The stems are also often weak and sometimes fall over. To keep the plants compact, they are pruned back regularly, but this can sometimes be omitted due to the crowds.
Therefore, keep in mind that the Alstroemerias you receive, sometimes look less flourishing. We must therefore reject complaints related to the above. Fortunately, Alstroemerias grow quickly and will recover well. Give the plants a moment and they will reward you with a rich bloom!

General information about Peruvian Lily (Alstroemeria):
Peruvian Lily (Alstroemeria) is a corm and rhizome forming perennial. The colourful flowers stand on the end of slim stems and often are nicely stripped or speckled. Peruvian Lily is also a good cut flower. They are plants for a well-draining, preferably somewhat acidic soil. The orange and yellow flowering Peruvian Lilies are reasonably hardy, but covering them with mulch or leaves in the winter is recommended. The varieties with a lot of white, pink and red in the flowers or with variegated foliage are less hardy. Good neighbours for Peruvian Lily are for example Coral Bells (Heuchera), Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa) and Tall Moor Grass (Molinia caerulea).

General information about Anemone (Anemone):
Anemone (Anemone) is a large genus with plants for in the sun and shade, tall or small, spring and autumn. Most Anemone do well normal to good garden soil in half shade. The low Anemone usually flower in spring and recede after flowering to reappear the following spring. Therefore, these low growing species suit themselves well for planting under shrubs or between taller growing perennials such as Hosta's (Hosta) and ferns. The taller Anemones (Japanese Anemone) usually flower in autumn and can be placed in a variety of positions. Give these taller Anemones a cover of leaves the first winter after planting. The following years they will be all right. Planted near to these Japanese Anemones, Culver's Root (Veronicastrum), Phlox (Phlox), Aster (Aster), Obedient Plant (Physostegia) and ornamental grasses look good.

General information about Chamomile (Anthemis):
Chamomile (Anthemis) is a perennial which produces a profusion of daisy like flowers. Apart from the usual yellow flowers, new varieties are now available in white and cream. Chamomile likes a position in the full sun in a well-draining, not too fertile soil. Too much fertilizer and the plant grows limp and lanky. Chamomile is a good cut flower and in the past the flowers were used in dyeing wools. Cutting back in the end of August promotes good root growth and ensures nice strong plants in next year. Chamomile combine well with Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa), Yarrow (Achillea) and Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia).
