Perennials - Shade

Below you will find all the perennials that thrive well in shade.
They are arranged in the order of their product code, which roughly corresponds to the alphabetical ordering. If you prefer the alphabetical ordering, please use our filters. There you can also refine your search with additional criteria, otherwise the selection will probably be too large.
Many perennials have a relatively wide range of light requirements. This is indicated separately in the description of each individual plant. If the conditions are not quite ideal, the plant will often still thrive, but the height and flowering may be less pronounced.
Light and moisture are closely linked. A perennial for partial shade, for example, can often tolerate more sun if the soil is moist enough.

General information about Bugle (Ajuga):
Bugle (Ajuga) is a carpeting evergreen perennial for in the sun or half shade. If in the sun, Bugle needs enough moisture. Bugle spreads with above ground creeping shoots and forms a nice carpet. If, after several years, you get some 'bold' patches, clear these patches and re-plant with some fresh new shoots. A great display is when you combine Bugle with blue flowers and dark foliage with orange Avens (Geum) and light blue or white Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera). This combination still looks good after flowering with its contrasting foliage.

General information about Onion (Allium):
The genus Onion (Allium) includes many vegetables but also plenty of ornamental species. Most Onions like a sunny position in a good, slightly alkaline soil. In the winter the bulbs can rot if they are too wet. If you plant your Onion in the autumn, cover them for the first winter with a layer of leaves. With a lot of the species the leaves will dye back during the flowering period. Remember this when planting and camouflage the gaps with, for instant, ornamental grasses. Some of the smaller species of Onion can spread vigorously. These are good for in a wild garden. Onion flowers attract lots of insects and are also good cut flowers. When the tall species flower on the nursery, they sometimes are too tall to ship out. We could cut them back, but then you loss that years flower. Best to order early or contact us first.

General information about Anemone (Anemone):
Anemone (Anemone) is a large genus with plants for in the sun and shade, tall or small, spring and autumn. Most Anemone do well normal to good garden soil in half shade. The low Anemone usually flower in spring and recede after flowering to reappear the following spring. Therefore, these low growing species suit themselves well for planting under shrubs or between taller growing perennials such as Hosta's (Hosta) and ferns. The taller Anemones (Japanese Anemone) usually flower in autumn and can be placed in a variety of positions. Give these taller Anemones a cover of leaves the first winter after planting. The following years they will be all right. Planted near to these Japanese Anemones, Culver's Root (Veronicastrum), Phlox (Phlox), Aster (Aster), Obedient Plant (Physostegia) and ornamental grasses look good.

General information about Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera):
Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera) are perennials with large rough leaves. The last few years has seen a lot of new variegated forms come to market. Great Forget-me-not flowers with pretty blue or white flowers in spring and prefers a position in half-or full shade in humus rich normal soil. It will tolerate sun as long as the soil is moist enough. The varieties with grey in their foliage withstand more sun than the creamy white ones. Great Forget-me-not is a strong plant and very suitable as a ground cover. The only maintenance needed is removing the dead foliage in spring. At the same time give them a hand full of compost. General information about Bellflower (Campanula):
Bellflowers (Campanula) are beautiful plants with many different forms. There are species suitable for the border, woodland garden, wild garden and in the rockery. They will grow in virtually any soil as long as this is not continually wet. Bellflower loves sun but will also do well in half shade. In the wild Bellflowers come in shades of blue to purple. Nowadays, new cultivars are available with white or pink, sometimes double, flowers. The taller Bellflowers are good cut flowers. Some species of Bellflower will self-seed. If you do not want this, cut away the stems after flowering.

Plant them near other plants with strong stems or let them droop over a wall. Make sure that Clematis is planted in the sun or half shade, but that the roots are shaded. You could plant a small evergreen shrub in front of it. Plant Clematis in a humus rich soil with enough drainage. Some added, dried farm manure in spring is very much appreciated.

General information about Lily of the Valley (Convallaria):
Lily of the Valley's (Convallaria) are perennials which can spread rapidly in a shady place and in fertile, humus rich soil. Sometimes they form such thick mats that they need thinning out. Lily of the Valley will grow in less ideal spots as well, even in dryer soil, but then will not a dense mat. On less ideal soils it is good to spread a little compost between the plants in spring. Some varieties of Lily of the Valley have variegated leaves and pinkish flowers. The flowers have a lovely sweet scent and are good for in a vase. After flowering, red berries can appear which are poisonous, as is the whole plant. Good plant partners for Lily of the Valley are Lesser Periwinkle (Vinca minor), Barrenwort (Epimedium) and Navelwort (Omphalodes).

General information about Hardy Cyclamen (Cyclamen):
Hardy Cyclamen (Cyclamen), who does not know them as the pot plant in grandma's window? There are also 'wild' and hardy species on the market. The plants are tuberous. Do not plant Hardy Cyclamen too deep and cover them up a little in their first winter. They want a spot in the half shade in humus rich soil and not too wet in the winter. Hardy Cyclamen easily cross pollinate, therefore the flowers and foliage can be quite variable. During the summer Hardy Cyclamen can go into a rest period and lose their leaves, only to re-appear freshly before flowering.

General information about Holly Fern (Cyrtomium):
Holly Ferns (Cyrtomium) are evergreen clump forming ferns with foliage you rarely see in ferns. Often the plant is not recognized as being a fern. The foliage looks like that of Holly. Most Holly Ferns are not fully hardy bur there are a few species that will withstand frost. These are the species Cyrtomium falcatum (Japanese Holly Fern) and Cyrtomium fortunei (Hardy Japanese Holly Fern). To be safe it is still better to give them a bit of protection against cold north-easterly winds to prevent damage to the leaves. Holly Fern likes half shade and will grow in all soils. Nice partners for Holly Fern are Yellow Waxbells (Kirengeshoma) and Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa).
