Slipper Orchid

Slipper Orchid  (Cypripedium)

Slipper Orchid (Cypripedium) has a very unusual flower which you just do not expect in our climate. Still, Slipper Orchid is reasonably hardy as long as not too wet in the winter. The soil must not be too fertile and well-draining. Throw a hand full of grit in the bottom of the plant hole and do not compact the soil to firm around the plant as not to damage the tender roots. The young shoots of Slipper Orchid are prone to getting damaged by a late frost in spring (cover with a fleece). Slipper Orchid is a specialist plant.
